Is this bird a Grasshopper warbler or a Lanceolated warbler?
Some of the arguments against me and the Grasshopper warbler is the pale edges on the tertials seen on all pictures except the first.
There was a Grasshopper Warbler in Norfolk a few years ago that was very pale and had only a few streaks.

Fair Isle has always been the place to see Lanceolated Warbler in Britain but since 1993 there have also been records annually on the English east coast.
In all probability Lanceolated Warbler has always been an annual vagrant to the UK but the difficulty in finding them has given rise to the bias of records in Shetland where the lack of cover makes them much easier to locate.
As Lanceolated Warblers almost certainly turn up on the east coast of mainland Scotland you don’t necessarily have to go to Fair Isle to find one but you will have to check ditches, areas of long grass and even dry stone walls (all seemingly unproductive areas), rather than the usual bushes and trees!

As far as the birds' welfare goes, the restraint shown was admirable, especially given the scarcity of some species and their probable eventual fate due to exhaustion and starvation.
The day we were after the Middendorf-grasshopper warbler, I was standing on side of the road looking down at the large rocks near Jerry Rossenbloom (sp?) on the beach.
I did not see any behavior that was "harmful to birds." I'm sure it may have appeared to some that the birds were "chased relentlessly" as we repeatedly flushed the Lanceolated warbler so that we all could get a good look.

Lanceolated's song is obviously a lot higher than Grasshopper's (I've never heard a Grasshopper Warbler sing higher than normal).
Lanceolated's song is maybe the mix of GW's and RW's songs, and we have been some records here in Finland, where odd RW's song has resembled quite lot LW's song.
