		On Friday 29th October 2004, the Lancet medical journal published a study of post-war mortality in Iraq which estimated that at least 100,000 excess civilian deaths had occurred since the 2003 invasion; that most were caused by violence; and that most of those violent deaths were caused by coalition air strikes.
		In addition, contrary to the PMOS’s claims about the tight focus of bombing, the Lancet study in fact found that in areas well away from Fallujah the most significant cause of the deaths it recorded was still violence, most attributed to coalition bombing (Roberts et al p.4).
		The Government must accept that despite shortcomings due to the difficulties faced by a small team of volunteer doctors collecting data in a war zone, the Lancet report is the most comprehensive study of Iraqi civilian deaths since 2003 currently available.

		The researchers called their estimate conservative because they excluded deaths in Fallujah, a city west of Baghdad that has been the scene of particularly intense fighting and has accounted for a disproportionately large number of deaths in the survey.
		The researchers and the Lancet editors acknowledged that the study has clear limitations, including a relatively small sample of violent deaths that were examined directly and the researchers' reliance on individual memories for some information.

		In our Media Alert, Burying The Lancet - Parts 1 And 2 (September 5 and 6), we focused on the media response to a November 2004 report in The Lancet which estimated nearly 100,000 excess civilians deaths in Iraq since the March 2003 US-UK invasion.
		I would invite you to consider the possibility that the 100,000 figure produced by the Lancet study has not been widely accepted because other evidence suggests that it is too high, rather than because of a media conspiracy [sic].
		I hope I understand probability well enough to understand that the Lancet study suggested a range of estimates, and that the actual figure could be at the lower end of the range.
