  Lanchester SMG - Definition, explanation
The British MP28 copy was given the general designation of Lanchester after George Lanchester who was charged with producing the weapon at the Sterling Armament Company, the same company that went on to produce the Sterling submachine gun that is presently the standard submachine gun of many nations.
The Lanchester emerged as a sound, sturdy weapon that in many ways was ideal for the type of operations required of it by boarding and raiding parties.
The Lanchester had a well machined wooden butt and stock, the blow back mechanism was made of the finest materials, the breech block well machined and the magazine housing was made from solid brass.

It was a very solid weapon, in many ways the complete opposite of its direct contemporary, the Sten, for the Lanchester was a soundly engineered piece of weaponry with all the trimmings of a former era.
On the Lanchester Mk I* this was changed to full automatic fire only, and many Mk Is were converted to Mk I* standard at Royal Navy workshops.

Submachine gun - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The submachine gun (sometimes abbreviated SMG) appeared during the later stages of WWI and was a product of trench warfare.
The Italians were the first to have a submachine gun in the war, the somewhat odd, Villar Perosa which entered service in 1915 and had sort of a heavy double automatic pistol configuration, with two 25 round box magazines feeding each barrel at 300 rounds per minute for each barrel.
The Thompson SMGs had been in development at the same time and even earlier as the Bergman and Beretta, but development went on hold in 1917, when the US and the weapon's designer entered the war.

Sten   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The STEN was a panic measure, designed at a time when Britain was facing imminent danger of being invaded by the Nazis.
As with the M1 Carbine, the STEN attracted affection and loathing in equal measure, its distinctively ugly design appealing to fans of the underdog, whilst its questionable reliability and durability did not endear it to front-line troops.
Nonetheless the Sten saw continued use even after the economic crunch of WWII was over, replacing the Royal Navy's Lanchester subamchine guns on into the 1960s.

The Lanchester was envisioned as a weapon that could be used for guarding prisoners and accompanying naval landing and assault parties.
The Lanchester was an unashamed copy of a German design, but gave good service to the Royal Navy throughout the war and for some years after.
The Lanchester was far heavier than the Sten and had a similar tendency to accidentally discharge if the gun was dropped or knocked on a hard object while cocked and loaded.

The most obvious difference between the MP28 and the Lanchester was the magazine housing, which on the latter was made of brass.
In all other major respects the Lanchester was a straight copy of the MP28, even down to the bayonet lug near the muzzle (though obviously the lug on the Lanchester accepted the 17 inch 1907 SMLE bayonet rather than the Mauser bayonet).
The Lanchester was well suited to use as a naval weapon as it was large, strong and heavy.

Add to that the ability to shoot 50 round Lanchester mags, almost as good as a drum, and sten mags in your M11 is an easy choice.
