Submachine gun - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A submachine gun is a firearm that combines the automatic fire of a machine gun with the ammunition of a pistol, and is usually between the two in weight and size.
Submachine guns lend themselves to moderation with suppressors, particularly so in cases where the weapon is loaded with subsonic ammunition.
Prominent recent examples of the submachine gun are the Israeli Military Industries Uzi submachine gun, the Heckler und Koch MP5 series, the Ingram MAC-10, the Skorpion, the Sterling and the FN P90 (itself part of a new generation of 'personal defence weapons', firing cartridges intermediate in power between a pistol and assault rifle round).

The submachine gun (sometimes called SMG) appeared during the later stages of WWI and was a product of trench warfare.
Certain submachine guns have also been available in specially-modified semi-automatic form, with non-removable 16" barrels and receivers modified so as to prevent conversion into a fully-automatic firearm; in this case, the submachine guns are treated as rifles, and are not subject to further regulations beyond those required for ownership of a rifle.

Lanchester SMG - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The British MP28 copy was given the general designation of Lanchester after George Lanchester who was charged with producing the weapon at the Sterling Armament Company, the same company that went on to produce the Sterling submachine gun that is presently the standard submachine gun of many nations.
The Lanchester emerged as a sound, sturdy weapon that in many ways was ideal for the type of operations required of it by boarding and raiding parties.
The Lanchester had a well machined wooden butt and stock, the blow back mechanism was made of the finest materials, the breech block well machined and the magazine housing was made from solid brass.

Experience, however, showed that the Mk II was fully capable of doing what a submachine gun is supposed to do at a fraction of the cost and weight of its more finely made counterparts.
A minor drawback was that the gun could be fired in semi-automatic only in the silenced mode, as the baffling system would quickly blow out from excess gas in full automatic.
