The Lancia Delta S4, while sharing the same name and appearance, was a "Group B" race car designed specifically for rallying, and entirely different from the commercial Delta in terms of construction and performance.
The Delta range was first introduced to the UK in 1980 and remained virtually unchanged until 1986, when small changes were made to the body shape and the engines updated; plus, of course, there was the addition of the four-wheel drive model.
But Lancia did not let this lull them into complacency, the l6 valve HF Integrale was being developed and was to run alongside its stablemate during the 1989 season.

The Lancia Delta S4 is a Group B rally car that competed in the World Rally Championship in 1985 and 1986, until Group B cars were banned from competition by the FIA.
Like Peugeot's earlier 205 T16, the Lancia Delta S4 was a Delta in name and body styling only (for marketing purposes), and shared virtually nothing in terms of construction with the production Delta.
The Group S Lancia ECV was to replace the Delta S4 in 1987 but Group S was scrapped along with Group B and Lancia used the production-derived Delta in 1987.

The Lancia Delta Integrale, more than any other car, has reached this status partly because of its complete dominance of the rallying world for many successive years and partly because of the outraging looks of the Evoluzione models.

The tragedies of the 1985 season affected Lancia particularly, as two of its works personnel were killed in Corsica at the wheel of an S4: Henri Toivonen and Sergio Cresto.
However, Lancia has since proved that the production Delta can win World Championship rallies, a 250 bhp version of the HF 4WD dominating the 1987 series after Group B was outlawed internationally at the close of 1986.

For those not old enough or/nor familiar with the Delta, to put it simply, the Lancia Delta of the 80s was then, what the Sti and Evo are now.
The name died with the disappearance of the second-generation Delta in 1999, but Lancia seems to have bowed to pressure from fans and has kicked off the chain of events that would lead to the Delta’s return.
At the moment there are no plans to bring the new Delta to the UK, although if the Lancia line-up continues its recent resurgence it increases the chances of bringing in a limited number of left-hand-drive models, or even a full UK relaunch of the Lancia brand.

There was a version of the Delta S4 being tested in the last months of the GrpB days.
Lancia was ironing out hte difficulties with the locked center diffs, not to mention the lag with he engine, you had to rev it to the top of the rpms to keep the torque up.
