The 1759 cc 4 cylinder engine of the Lancia Delta S4 Strada was force-fed by both a supercharger and a turbocharger, this meant the cars immense power was available throughout a much wider rev range.
The 4-wheel drive transmission of the Lancia Delta S4 Strada could be adjusted from 75/25 rear/forward bias, to 60/40, depending on conditions and driver preferences.

The Lancia Delta S4 is a Group B rally car that competed in the World Rally Championship in 1985 and 1986, until Group B cars were banned from competition by the FIA.
Like Peugeot's earlier 205 T16, the Lancia Delta S4 was a Delta in name and body styling only (for marketing purposes), and shared virtually nothing in terms of construction with the production Delta.
The Group S Lancia ECV was to replace the Delta S4 in 1987 but Group S was scrapped along with Group B and Lancia used the production-derived Delta in 1987.

The Lancia Delta was a successful car sold by Lancia from 1979 to 1994 and was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro.

Lancia's Monte Carlo rally car was, by 1985, seriously outgunned in performance by the Pug and Audi, giving up some 60 bhp to it's rivals.
Adopting the more popular mid-engined layout, the S4 engine was longitudinally mounted behind the front seats, directly driving the viscous-coupling LSD which transfered 30% torque to front wheels and 70% to the rear.
The S4 employed twin intercoolers, one for the turbo and one for the supercharger.

The Lancia Delta S4 was Lancia's follow up to the 037, their first Group B car.
Although the 037 was competitive, Lancia realised that they'd need 4 wheel drive to compete with the 205 T16, Quattro Sport S1, RS200 etc and the Delta S4 was the solution.
The S4 was introduced in 1985, but never really had the chance to prove itself as it proved instrumental in the removal of Group B from the WRC.

The S4 was capable of hitting 60 from rest in just 2.3 seconds on a gravel road and in the hands of Toivonen lapped the Estoril Formula One circuit so quickly he would have qualified sixth on the grid for the 1986 Portuguese Grand Prix.
Sadly the S4 was Toivonen's, and Group B's, undoing when he left the road and plunged down a rocky hillside on the Tour de Corse in May 1986.
