	Heroes of the Gem - Lancre
		A late comer to the Heroes, Brother Lancre was appointed to proceed on the Quest of the Gem for largely political reasons, at the insistance of the Church of Mordant.
		When Lancre was given rulership of one of the five Cantons of Slumber, he quickly established a haven for fellow Mordants to come and practice their religion, and Mordants did indeed come from far and wide, even as far as Lochnirr on the Isle of Onlor.
		Although Lancre cannot claim title to Highest Brother of the Church of Mordant, he is certainly one of the more accomplished and respected Brothers and his deeds on the Quest of the Gem merely add to his stature.

		Lancre is based mainly on the North of England (as in Lanc(ashi)re), but is reminiscent of many rural areas in Britain and elsewhere, although its resemblance to windswept, hilly, northern regions is the most obvious (the only piece of flat, level ground in Lancre is in a museum).

		She deals effectively with a coven of teen-aged witch wannabes, but doesn't count on the vagaries of sheer chance when a group of "rude mechanicals" go up to the Dancers to practice a play.
		Pratchett's elves are nasty critters, and he doesn't mind saying so, but his point of view is supported by the folklore which indicates that elves consider human beings as a kind of animal made available for their amusement.
		There is a thread of horror running through the description of the elvish rampage through Lancre, and this element lends weight to the story, preventing it from dissolving into fluff.

		In the small mountain kingdom of Lancre, King Verence is murdered by the scheming Duke and Duchess Felmet, who take over as rulers and start oppressing the people and burning their homes.
		It's also hard to ignore the fact that Felmet is dangerously insane, and his presence on the throne is awakening powers best left asleep.
		When Granny and her fractious coven learn of Felmet's scheme to cast himself as the heroic savior of Lancre and the witches as scheming, meddling hags, they decide that if they're going to meddle, they might as well do it right.
