CHICAGO - Lands' End Chief Executive Mindy Meads was fired because she was resisting her bosses' plans to make wider use of Lands' End's high-quality preppy apparel in Sears and Kmart stores, according to a source familiar with the situation.
Meads, named CEO of the Dodgeville, Wis., company in February 2004, realized a showdown might be coming but she thought the strong performance of the Lands' End catalog would protect her at least for a while, the source said.
Lands' End had estimated 2004 sales of $2.2 billion and is the leading seller of apparel on the Internet, he said.
