Land of Black Gold (originally Tintin au Pays de l'Or Noir) is one of a series of classic comic-strip albums, written and illustrated by Belgian writer and illustrator Hergé, featuring young reporter Tintin as a hero.
Land of Black Gold had been started before the Captain's first appearance in The Crab with the Golden Claws, but was not completed until after Hergé had produced more of Tintin's adventures, all of which included the captain.

The Red Sea Sharks has been criticised for its sterotypical portrayal of Africans, both in appearance and behaviour; although obviously good-hearted, the fl characters are shown as being somewhat childish and simple.
In the author's defence, Herge obviously had a real contempt for slavery, as evidenced by the scene in which Captain Haddock hurls obscenities at an Arab trying to buy a slave.

It includes both the first story by Hergé that I ever read with "Land of Black Gold," and also my favorite two-part Tintin adventure when out young intrepid reporter, Snowy, and their friends head for the moon.
Because "Land of Black Gold" was the first Adventure of Tintin I ever read it has a special place in my heart.
I like the part in the Land of Black Gold when Thompson with a P as in "psychology" falls asleep and drives the Jeep into the Arabien city!

The outbreak of war brought an end to Le Petit Vingtième and, with it, Land of Black Gold, which was abandoned at the end of page 26 of the modern version.
The story was finally resumed in Tintin magazine on September 6, 1948.

More Historical Notes: "Tintin in the Land of Black Gold" (the 9th Tintin Adventure) was the episode in progress in "Le Vingtieme Siecle" when German troops invaded Belgium on May 10, 1940.
Herge suspended the story for eight years and actually began another adventure, "The Crab with the Golden Claws," in the interim, which was published in "Le Soir," one of the few newspapers authorized during the German occupation.

When Hergé release the first version of "fl gold" in 1940, Tintin is alone.
Tintin goes to Khemed to investigate the probable war, and the source of the oil, so it's only reasonable to think that Haddock's navy would have got him to do the same.
In the 1939 'Black Gold' we have already seen the presence of Her Majesty's Royal Navy operating and controlling the area.

It seems that all around the world cars (or lighters) using petrol are exploding.
This delicate balance seems to be reflected even in Herge's artwork, where his "clear-line" style combines iconic characters with unusually realistic backgrounds, appeals to me. I also admire his remarkable restraint with Snowy, who "talks" less than any other "talking" dog in comic book history.

The Crab with the Golden Claws had several fragments redesigned and The Black Island was completely redesigned.
Also part of Land of Black Gold was redesigned, some drawings from Tintin in America were redesigned and there are differences in various editions of Cigars of the Pharaoh.
