RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project: William Andrew McReynolds Family Tree
The granting of military bounty land in the United States to encourage enlistments or reward previous service began in colonial times, but its legislative heyday was from 1788 to 1855, though claims were still being received by the federal government in the 1960s.
Colonial legislatures gave land for military service, such as for the Narragansett campaign of King Philip's War, 1675 to 1676, but these were mostly private acts passed to reward meritorious service to the colony.
Gates states, without elaborating, that Connecticut gave bounty land; but this seems to refer to the Fire Lands in Ohio granted to individuals burned out in the revolution rather than to grants to soldiers.

The SF Site Featured Review: Tales of the King's Blades
While each book -- Gilded Chain, Lord of the Fire Lands, and Sky of Swords -- has been written in the guise of a stand-alone and can, I suppose, be read as such, Duncan's compositional accomplishments cannot be fully appreciated, nor inconsistencies existing within the parallel stories understood, without a reading of the entire series.
In Lord of the Fire Lands, Duncan shifts his narrative to a different character as well as a storyline that largely takes place in another realm, the volcanic, archipelagic kingdom of Baelmark.
Up until now, Princess Malinda has been a peripheral figure, and her arrival within the story marks a decided shift from the masculine swordplay of the previous novels to more of an emphasis upon court intrigue, elements of love and the differences often inherent in a change of gender.
