Land of the Lost: The Complete Series | PopMatters Television Review
Season One of Land of the Lost is a true minor gem in the sci-fi genre, a show that took itself, and its premise, very seriously.
Right from the beginning, the changes were obvious: less overriding, serialized story arcs and more episodic installments with all dilemmas wrapped up neat and tidy in 25 minutes; greater emphasis on the 'cute' and 'commercial' Pakuni; more baby dinosaurs (Holly had a "pet" named Dopey that was a breakout character in the first series).
And in the case of Land of the Lost, change was only took the show ever farther away from where it wanted to be.

But other features, such as the Lost City and the pylons, which TARDIS-like are bigger on the inside than the outside, are signs of a highly advanced culture; one, which we later learn, built the Land of the Lost.
While the original Land of the Lost does have some flaws, it at least had interesting scripts and looked like it was another world; and it had a certain quality to it that the remake-- which was filmed in some park-- lacked.

Writer Joyce Perry, who penned two episodes of the series in its freshman and sophomore seasons ("Stone Soup" and "The Longest Day"), remembers being impressed with story editor David Gerrold and his attempts to keep the prehistoric world of the series consistent from episode to episode.
Unfortunately, the third season revamp proved controversial with long time fans who felt that new episodes contradicted material presented during Gerrold's tenure In particular, the first two seasons had defined the land of the lost as a closed pocket unverse from which escape was not possible unless;balance was maintained.

dOc DVD Review: Land of the Lost: The Complete First Season (1974)
Land of the Lost debuted in September, 1974 leapfrogging over traditional Saturday morning animated television in favor of presenting a live action time travel adventure, combined with hokey Chroma Key effect dinosaurs.
Despite the wealth of noted writers, the plots weren't really the charm of the show as much as it was the presentation, with its constant use of miniatures and Chroma Key (sort of a primitive precursor to the smoother bluescreen effects of today) that brought together human actors with stop-motion dinosaurs.
Though nowhere near as immortal as the work of Ray Harryhausen, in 1974 the effects were considered fairly groovy, at least by the audience of young viewers.
