Rehabilitation (subactivity 9262) funds can only be used for rehabilitation needs assessments and rehabilitation plan development and implementation on FWS lands within the perimeter of the fire or impact area downstream from the burned area.
Rehabilitation funds are used for fencing or relocation (both actions must be consistent with approved land management plans and FWS wild horse and burro policy) until the area is rehabilitated.
Rehabilitation treatments may only be planned and implemented on wildland fire for resource benefit when the Periodic Fire Assessment identified impacts caused by the fire on ecological resources were outside the range of acceptable effects which in turn triggered the preparation of a WFSA to guide the selection of a different appropriate management response.

Land rehabilitation is the process of returning the land in a given area to some degree of its former self, after some process (business, industry, natural disaster etc.) has damaged it.
Modern mine rehabilitation aims to minimize and mitigate the environmental effects of modern mining, which may in the case of open pit mining involve movement of significant volumes of rock.
Often in gold mines, rehabilitation is performed by scavenger operations which treat the soil within the plant area for spilled gold using modified placer mining gravity collection plants.

Integrated planning and management of land resources is the subject of chapter 10 of Agenda 21, which deals with the cross-sectoral aspects of decision-making for the sustainable use and development of natural resources, including the soils, minerals, water and biota that land comprises.
This broad integrative view of land resources, which are organized in ecosystems which are essential for life-support systems and the productive capacity of the environment, is the basis of Agenda 21’s and the Commission on Sustainable Development’s consideration of land issues.
The sectoral cluster of land, desertification, forests and biodiversity, as well as mountains (chapters 10-13 and 15 of Agenda 21) were considered by CSD-3 in 1995 and again at the five-year review in1997.

 Mining: Land Rehabilitation
Geophysicists and mining engineers have been improving their seismic prospecting techniques to reduce the chances of drilling dry wells, since it is known that the transportation of the machinery required even for this first stage of mine construction can cause significant environmental damage.
Land rehabilitation is now a major issue for all mining companies, and millions of dollars are spent on the correct handling of the closure of a mine.
Most companies follow environmental engineers’ advice to restore land to its original condition, and this usually means filling in mines, replanting native flora, and reintroducing native animal species to the area.

New Federal mined land reclamation regulations have increased industrial stewardship awareness and interest in landscape rehabilitation but the scientific basis for understanding how sustainable reclamation systems are achieved, especially in the desert regions, is just beginning to be developed.
New lands are not always available for irrigation development, the cost of development is often prohibitive, and soils that are available are often marginal (i.e., low fertility, sandy texture, and saline).
Because the use of row crops is an impractical approach to land reclamation, the planting of a mixture of shrubs, used for animal browsing and nitrogen fixation, and grasses used for land stabilization and animal grazing, seems appropriate.
