Usually found on luxury cars, a landau roof enhances the outside appearance by adding an element of formality to a car's roofline.
Landau roofs most commonly use vinyl as a covering material, but sometimes can be found covered with a durable cloth.
Since the landau roof covering is different from the painted surfaces of the remainder of the roof and body, it requires different upkeep.

 Landau_Lev biography
Lev Landau's mother had trained in medicine and she had undertaken work in physiology, while his father was a petroleum engineer who worked at the oil fields in Baku on the Caspian Sea.
Landau was still only fourteen years old when he entered Baku University (later called the Kirov Azerbaijan State University) in 1922 and by this time he was already enthusiastic about mathematics, physics and chemistry.
Landau devised a theory to explain such behaviour which was published in 1941.

 Lev Davidovich Landau
Lev Davidovich Landau (Russian language: Ле́в Дави́дович Ланда́у) (January 22, 1908 – April 1, 1968) was a prominent Soviet physicist and winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics whose broad field of work included the theory of superconductivity and superfluidity, quantum electrodynamics, nuclear physics and particle physics.
He was interested and equally competent in every aspect of physics and the participants in the seminar did not find it easy to follow train of thought in instantaneously switching from the discussion of, say, the properties of strange particles to the discussion of the energy spectrum of electrons in silicon.
Landau’s scientific style was free of the – unfortunately fairly widespread – tendency to complicate simple things (often on the grounds of generality and rigor which, however, usually turn out to be illusory).

A landau is a lightweight open carriage on elliptical springs, invented in the 18th century (first noted in English in 1743 [1]), and named after the city of Landau in the Rhenish Palatinate, French at the time, where they were first produced.
A landau, drawn by a pair or four-in-hand, is similar to a vis-à-vis, a social carriage with facing seats over a dropped footwell (illustration), which was perfected by mid-19th century in the form of a swept base that flowed in a single curve.
In the 1920s and 1930s, especially in the United States, the term "landau" became used for a simulated convertible, in which a fixed roof of a sedan with solid rear quarters was covered with fabric or leather and fitted with side landau bars in order to appear like a convertible top.

The Thunderbird Special Landau was introduced in the Spring of 1965, and differed from the regular Landau due to its unique combination of interior and exterior colors, as well as differences in trim.

 Viper vs Hemi Challenger
Some may call it crazy to compare a new car that has huge 13-inch disc brakes, modern-tech engine control, six forward gears and nearly 1g road-holding capability to an old car that has lousy drum brakes at the back, two obsolete carburetors, four forward gears (with no overdrive) and about 0.70g of skidpad grip.
However, both cars are close because they both ran in the low 13s during their respective days in the limelight.
At least the Hemi cars had 11-inch discs up front, otherwise you’d be in big trouble when it came time to halt the 2270 pounds of front axle weight that’s over them.

 Imperial Hearses - Historical Discussion
An early issue of CARS and PARTS from the late 1960's had an ad with a photo of a '59 Imperial long-wheelbase limousine-style ambulance, and it was obviously a National.
National advertised an Imperial landau hearse in '64, but it used an illustration that was obviously a side view of a stock Imperial with artwork superimposed on it, and such a car would never have actually looked like the artwork, if indeed such a coach was ever built.
Some day, people are going to think those cars were lousy because of their rarity, when it was the way they were built that led to the demise of so many of them in demo derbies.

 Carriage Summary
The word car meaning "wheeled vehicle," came from Norman French at the beginning of the 14th century; it was extended to cover automobile in 1896.
By the early 19th century one's choice of carriage was only in part based on practicality and performance; it was also a status statement and subject to changing fashions.
The names of many have now been relegated to obscurity but some have been adopted to describe automotive car body styles: coupé, victoria, Brougham, landau and landaulet, cabriolet, (giving us our cab), phaeton, and limousine— all once denoted particular models of carriages.
