Landau pole - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In physics, Landau pole is the energy scale (or the precise value of the energy) where a coupling constant (the strength of an interaction) of a quantum field theory becomes infinite.
However, the phrase "Landau pole" is usually used in the context of the theories that are not asymptotically free, such as quantum electrodynamics (QED) or a scalar field with a quartic interaction.
Since the Landau pole is calculated using one-loop or two-loop calculations but perturbation theory breaks down for large coupling constants, there has been some controversy as to whether the Landau pole really exists or if we have a UV fixed point instead.

Lev Landau - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
His accomplishments include the co-discovery of the density matrix method in quantum mechanics, the quantum mechanical theory of diamagnetism, the theory of superfluidity, the theory of second order phase transitions, the Ginzburg-Landau theory of superconductivity, the explanation of Landau damping in plasma physics, the Landau pole in quantum electrodynamics, and the two-component theory of neutrinos.
Recognized very early as a child prodigy in mathematics, Landau was quoted as saying in later life that he scarcely remembered a time when he was not familiar with calculus.
Apart from his theoretical accomplishments, Landau was the principal founder of a great tradition of theoretical physics in the Soviet Union, sometimes referred to as the "Landau school".

 Lev Davidovich Landau
Lev Davidovich Landau (Russian language: Ле́в Дави́дович Ланда́у) (January 22, 1908 – April 1, 1968) was a prominent Soviet physicist and winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics whose broad field of work included the theory of superconductivity and superfluidity, quantum electrodynamics, nuclear physics and particle physics.
He was interested and equally competent in every aspect of physics and the participants in the seminar did not find it easy to follow train of thought in instantaneously switching from the discussion of, say, the properties of strange particles to the discussion of the energy spectrum of electrons in silicon.
Landau’s scientific style was free of the – unfortunately fairly widespread – tendency to complicate simple things (often on the grounds of generality and rigor which, however, usually turn out to be illusory).

Subsequent to the initial investigations, Landau Associates assisted the port with development of a cleanup action plan in coordination with the Department of Ecology, design and construction of interim remedial actions to prevent the further release of contaminants to Budd Inlet, and (presently), design, permitting and remedial construction to cleanup the impacted sediments.
Landau Associates assisted the port in design and construction of a series of interim remedies consisting of a slurry wall and expanded groundwater pump-and-treat system to contain contaminated soil and groundwater, site capping to minimize surface water infiltration, and an upland containment cell to store the contaminated sediments that will be dredged this summer.
Landau Associates has worked with the port throughout this project to arrive at a remedy that addresses the many environmental concerns and interests, while also balancing budgetary constraints.

One week after setting school record in the pole vault at 12-11 3/4 at the Rod McCravy Invitational, Landau reset the Miami pole vault standard for the fifth time in her career with a vault of 13-0.
Landau, who improved her NCAA provisional qualifying standing with her record-setting vault, was one of six different athletes to post individual wins at the Doden Fieldhouse, with junior Lashonda Davis (Kokomo, Ind.) finishing as the only Miami athlete with multiple individual wins.
Landau, Davis and senior Lindsey Arundel (Rocky River, Ohio) each tallied top finishes in the pole vault (13-0), long jump (18-8) and shot put (44-9), respectively, with Landau setting both a meet record and fieldhouse record with her vault.

 Re: Questions about Constructing QED
I already gave you the formal definition of the Landau pole: it's a pole in the running coupling constant regarded as a function of momentum.
That's true: I gave you this reference because it's a nice introduction to the concepts involved in the Landau pole phenomenon, not because it uses the term "Landau pole".
It really makes the point that in the 1960s, after the discovery of the Landau pole but before the discovery of asymptotically free theories, most physicists believed quantum field theory was fundamentally flawed - due to the Landau pole.

Montvay and Munster: Quantum Fields on a Lattice An extensive discussion of the Landau pole with a long discussion of the Luscher and Weisz investigation of the LP at strong coupling.
Most people believe that the Landau Pole is real (even if the value of a_crit computed in perturbation theory is wrong) and that, therefore, QED does not exist as a continuum QFT.
In this case the Landau pole is not real, but is simply the result of a mistake coming about from the use of improper integrals without paying sufficient attention to the manner of taking limits.

Re: A basic question about Landau pole
Such formulae are consequences of the renormalization group running of the coupling constant of the schematic form 1/e^2 = 1/e0^2 - beta.ln(Lambda/E0) (###) The Landau pole is where 1/e^2 becomes zero, i.e.
The other charged particle species contribute a positive amount to the beta function, but if their number is small enough, the beta function remains negative and the theory is asymptotically free.
The increase of the coupling with energy will therefore stop at the unification scale, and the Landau pole will be avoided.

As a simple step toward the characterization of such a vacuum the value of the one-loop effective action is computed for Euclidean de Sitter spaces as a function of the curvature when the unstable conformal modes are held fixed.
Two phases are found, one where the curvature is large and an IR Landau pole suggests confinement of gravitons and another one which appears to be weakly coupled and tends to be flat.
The induced cosmological constant is positive or negative in the strongly or weakly curved phase, respectively.

The second is the vacuum stability bound: the running Higgs coupling constant lambda(mu) should not become negative leading to the instability of the usual SM vacuum.
