Landguard Fort - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1667 the Dutch landed a force of 1500 men on Felixstowe beach and advanced on the fort, but were repulsed by Nathaniel Darrell and his small garrison, and had to abandon the siege because of the lack of water on the shingle spit.
New batteries were built in the 1750s and 1780, but the biggest change was in the 1870s where the interior barracks were rebuilt to a keep-like design, the river frontage was rebuilt with a new casemated battery covered by a very unusual caponier with a spectacular quarter sphere bomb proof nose.
The fort hosts a bird observatory, and is important for the study of bird migration.

To the south, the harbour is bounded by the port of Harwich, to the north by the dock and seaside resort of Felixstowe.
This fort was built early this century (circa 1915), to cover the northern part of the approach channel, which was almost out of sight of the guns at Landguard and also to engage large enemy vessels, of the size of cruisers and upwards.
The old fort buildings were used for accommodation, stores, and administration; it also housed the naval signal station (the Port War Signal Station) which controlled all shipping movements in and out of the base and harbourage.

At Landguard, the gun crews of the Right Battery 6” guns were never further away than the shelters next to the guns; there was always a lookout in the Command Post and at each gun.
The main fort buildings were used for a while as barrack accommodation, but the subsidiary buildings etc. to the north and west of the fort were eventually razed, as the new Felixstowe container port grew.
The fort was then left empty and unattended, suffering badly from vandalism, until its importance as part of the country’s historical heritage was realised.

The position of the fort also revealed that it was very well sited to spot the approach of the Dutch as it had a good view of the North Sea.
The morale of the soldiers would have been very low as they went into battle as once they saw the fort's defences and that it was undamaged they would have known that victory would be near impossible and that many men would die.
The failure of the sea attack which left the fort undamaged would have been one of the greatest reasons of why the Dutch attack failed as the men had no chance of taking the undamaged fort.
