About 10 miles west of Ali Masjid lies Landi Kotal fort and cantonment (3,518 feet); this is the highest point in the pass and is also an important market centre with an alternate route back to Peshawar.
The main pass, however, descends from Landi Kotal through Shinwari territory to Landi Khana, where it runs through another gorge and enters Afghanistan territory at Towr Kham (Torkham; 2,300 feet), winding another 10 miles down the valley to Lowyah Dakkah.
The railway (opened 1925) through the pass connects Jamrud with Landi Khana, near the Afghan frontier; the line, with its 34 tunnels and 94 bridges and culverts, revolutionized transportation in the area.

Before the stoppage of train operation early in eighties, 131 Up from Peshawar to Landi Kotal and 132 Down, which is the same P.R. train in the reverse direction runs on Sundays only and it carries second-inter-third-class passengers only.
Light years later, another survey, this time in the Khyber Pass itself, was made for a railway either metre gauge or narrow as far as Landi Kotal, the summit of the Pass.
Landi Kotal was opened on 3 November 1925, and on down to Landi Khana, just two miles short of the actual frontier post, on 3 April 1926.

LANDI KOTAL, June 16: At least 150 Afghan refugees' families would be repatriated to their homeland from the Shalman refugee camp in the Khyber Agency.
Agency administrator for Afghan refugees Humayun Kukikhel told Dawn on Monday that the voluntary repatriation would start on June 17 and hoped that another hundred or so families would be repatriated in near future.
The returning families, after going through scrutiny procedure, would be shifted to Landi Kotal for their onward journey to Afghanistan via the Torkham border.

PESHAWAR, Oct 27: The Shalman water supply scheme, being launched to meet the requirement of the people of Landi Kotal from river Kabul, would cost Rs318 million in three phases, NWFP Governor Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah was told during a presentation on Monday.
According to the proposal, water will be lifted from the river at Shalman in the Khyber Agency and pumped to Inzari top, where big reservoirs will be constructed for supply to Landi Kotal and its surrounding areas.
The governor was told during another briefing that Rs268.79 million had been earmarked for the development of the irrigation sector in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas and construction of 12 small dams would be started next month.

The journalist said that Mr Bassey had received food and fresh clothes from the friends and family of two guides he was travelling with at the time of his arrest.

LANDI KOTAL, March 8: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has started assisting around 67 Afghan families residing at the Shalman refugee camp in their return to Afghanistan and relocating other families to the Kotkai refugee camp in Bajaur Agency.
The return of 67 families, comprising over 400 individuals, who made a request in this regard on Sunday, was being taken place under the UNHCR voluntary repatriation programme.
According to a UNHCR press release, 47 per cent out of 10,347 refugees of Shalman camp, situated about 25km north of Landi Kotal, wanted to return to their homeland.
