A landing craft is a type of boat used to convey landing force (infantry and vehicles) on to a shore during an assault from sea to land.
Landing Craft are ships or smaller vessels whose primary purpose is to place elements of an army on an (enemy held) beach.
They were towed to the beach by larger craft such as the LCT which would carry the assault teams of the Royal Engineers with their specialist vehicles and equipment to complete the beach clearance.

 Landing Craft - www.canadiansoldiers.com
Landing Craft are a type of naval vessel used to convey ground troops, vehicles and equipment over water obstacles and land them on potentially hostile shores.
While landing craft date back to the age of sail (generally consisting of standard small, oar-driven boats as used by larger vessels for other duties), their first widespread use in modern Canadian military history was during the Second World War.
The Landing Craft, Flak (LCF) was developed in time for six to participate in the Dieppe Raid in Aug 1942; these were LCTs transformed into fire support ships by the addition of two 4-inch guns, or eight 2-lb mortars, or four 20mm Oerlikon anti-aircraft guns.

Tanks and tank destroyers of the 751st Tank Battalion and the 601st Tank Destroyer Battalion were brought up to reduce these strong points.

In close company, any major landing craft was difficult to hold on station; in a typhoon, trying to stop was impossible as great seas swept one craft hundreds of feet past the ship ahead.
Even if the ship ahead was visible in the torrential rain there was little chance of avoiding her once another craft came too close astern, so the LCT flotilla leaders' signalmen risked their lives to flash lights as a guide when the craft spread out.
Not all life in LCTs was as hectic as this, but from the early days of the Royal Navy's LCT operations supporting the Eighth Army in North Africa, when ill-ventilated quarters made living aboard intolerably hot, through all major and most minor operations, LCT crews consolidated their reputation for delivering the goods.

 The Boat That Sank Hitler
It was Higgins whose miracles of design and production poured forth the thousands of ramp-fronted landing craft that altered forever the concept of the amphibious assault, both on the shores of Europe and on the island beaches of the Pacific war.
So vital was Higgins to the war effort that "Higgins boat" became the generic name for the stubby but versatile landing craft, large and small, that ferried tanks, jeeps, troops and supplies from Allied transports to beaches under enemy fire.
While a landing craft is obviously not the same as an aircraft carrier, the figure is nonetheless instructive.
