A cookhouse for employees of the mill was built as the lower mill was built from the timbers cut in the upper mill.
The operation of the mill did cause some pollution, nothing dangerous or long lasting, mostly bark from the logs as they were dumped from the river and into the mill.

The next mill erected, a few mile south on Rock Creek, was built in 1839 by William P. Hiddleson on the west line of Section 26.
Midway between the Stinemeyer and Appel mills, Ephriam Bechtel built a wood oak frame dam on Rock Creek and dug a race to bypass the dam and supply power for a saw mill on what is now the Stuzke place due east of the Greenwood School.
The Landis family were pioneers of Fiji, Samuel Landis being mentioned as plowing a trail to Fiji in 1836 with oxen using a small tree to cut a furrow.

The approach to its oldest one, Martin's Mill Bridge (also called Bitzer's Mill Bridge), built in 1846 and spanning the Conestoga River on Cider Mill Road, was perpendicular to the bridge, offering a good view of its red wooden walls, white roof and lone window.
When bikes entered the bridge, the bumping of skinny tires made it clear that the floor slats dated from a time when such insubstantial wheels had no use.
In autumn, pumpkins and apples spill out of wooden crates at farm stands, often close to the bridges, where residents know tourists will be passing, or in more populated areas farther on the route.

There has been many deaths on this bridge, but a few years ago two elderly ladies who where sisters and lived not even a fourth of the mile from the bridge, accidentally ran off the side of the bridge on the way home.
This bridge is believed to be haunted by the spirits of a Mexican family, who's car ran off the bridge.
