In Europe in the early 18th century, improvised landmines or booby traps were constructed in the form of bombs buried in shallow wells in the earth and covered with scrap metal and/or gravel to serve as shrapnel.
Small landmines such as the Chinese Type 72 or the U.S. M-14 will result in a "traumatically amputated" foot up to the ankle, while large Russian PMN Blast mines with 200 g of TNT are so powerful that activating them will likely result in the injury of both of the subject's legs.

Landmines reportedly continue to be laid today in fighting between the Taliban, which controls all but parts of central and northeast Afghanistan, and a loose coalition of opposition forces.
Most of the landmines in Afghanistan were emplaced during the Soviet occupation and the subsequent communist regime between 1980 and 1992.
Of the 1,218 casualties, the type of device causing the incident was identified for 1,110: landmines 472 casualties, UXO 476 casualties; antivehicle mines 35 casualties; booby-traps 14 casualties; fuses 50 casualties; and cluster munitions 63 casualties.

The solution to the world’s landmine problem is to make mine-affected countries mine-safe through the execution of mine action programs that lead to raising awareness of the landmine danger, the removal of landmines themselves, and the provision of holistic assistance to landmine victims and their families.
The landmine problem no longer is defined by the sheer number of landmines, but rather by the number of casualties inflicted, the amount of land rendered unusable or inaccessible, and the degree of economic infrastructure destroyed.
While the landmine community acknowledges a reduction in the number of landmines and casualties, it remains ever mindful that landmines are still killing and injuring thousands of unsuspecting people, and that a great deal of effort lies ahead if this terrible humanitarian tragedy is to be overcome.

Landmine Monitor is an unprecedented initiative by the ICBL to monitor implementation of and compliance with the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty, and more generally to assess the efforts of the international community to resolve the landmines problem.
Landmine Monitor identified at least 7,987 new casualties to landmines and UXO in 2001, as compared to 8,064 in 2000.
Landmine Monitor estimates that there are some 230 million antipersonnel mines in the arsenals of 94 countries, with the biggest estimated to be China (110 million), Russia (60-70 million), United States (11.2 million), Ukraine (6.4 million), Pakistan (6 million), India (4-5 million), and Belarus (4.5 million).
