Norrland (literally "Northern lands") is the name for the lands annexed as the realm expanded to the north on both sides of the Gulf of Bothnia.
By the time of the Treaty of Stolbovo, 1617, the significance of these particular lands of Sweden was chiefly historical and diffusely geographical.

The 'Realm of Sweden'\ or Svenska väldet is a term that historically was used to comprise all the territories under the control of the Swedish monarchs.
The nucleus of the Swedish kingdom lay in unification of the ancient lands of Götaland and Svealand in the 11th and 12th century.
The monarchs would gradually strengthen their authority at the expense of the provinces and in the 15th century the provincial laws were replaced by a single law for the entire kingdom.

As was the case with other European elites of the time, wealthy Scandinavians considered the eastern seaboard of the Americas a promising site for investment and sought to launch colonial enterprises there.

By the middle of the century, the time was ripe for mass immigration, and Scandinavians began arriving in American ports in large numbers.
