  Landsknecht - LoveToKnow 1911
LANDSKNECHT, a German mercenary foot-soldier of the 16th century.
The name (German for "man of the plains") was given to mark the contrast between the force of these soldiers, formed by the emperor Maximilian I.
The landsknechts were raised by colonels (Oberst), to whom the emperor issued recruiting commissions corresponding to the English "indents"; they were organized in regiments made up of a colonel, lieut.-colonel and regimental staff, with a varying number of companies, "colours" (Feihnlein), commanded by captains (Hauptmann); subaltern officers were lieutenants and ensigns (Fiihnrich).

 History
The term Landsknecht translated literally means "servant of the country" and first began appearing in the German language in approximately 1470.
This new mobile infantry, the Landsknechte, pikemen in the tradition of the dreaded Swiss mercenaries, were trained in large numbers, and fast became the main body of mercenary armies throughout Europe.
The Landsknecht army, as it was, was a fearsome sight to behold.

The costuming is typical Landsknecht with the ultra-flamboyant cap with feathers, the gaudy trousers with the slashing patterns, and the tunic with bloused sleeves.
The oak-leaf motif on the horse’s tail and mane are as Germanic as Knackwurst.

Reviews of 'Landsknecht Soldier 1486-1560 (Warrior)'
I particularly enjoyed his section on the structure of a Landsknecht regiment and the officers that led it- the roles of the nachrichter and hurenweibel were quite amusing.
He does briefly mention (in the caption of an illustration), the significance of the katzbalger, a Landsknecht's favourite sword, and in his colour plates displays the tactics of a regiment during a battle, but he doesn't write much on either subject.
I think that the content of the book is pretty well done as all Osprey books in 64 pages they try to give the most important info from the Origins of the Landsknecht, organization, army life, religion, costume(one of the most important part) and the decline.
