 Literary Encyclopedia: Hugh MacDiarmid
“Hugh MacDiarmid”; was the pseudonym of Christopher Murray Grieve (1892-1978), born in the small Border town of Langholm in Dumfriesshire, the eldest of two sons of John Grieve, a local postman, and Elizabeth Graham, the daughter of a farm labourer.
As a poet and as a literary-political figure, he contrived to engineer a cultural renaissance in which a new Scottish literature might be imagined, and to prove first-hand the quality and variety of what might be written in that context.
While at Langholm Academy he was encouraged by his English teacher, the composer F G Scott (with whom he was later to develop a close friendship), and by T S Cairncross, the minister of the church MacDiarmid’s parents attended and himself a poet.

Erected into a burgh of barony by charter from the Crown in 1643, Langholm was long governed by a baron bailie, under the Duke of Buccleuch as superior; but now its affairs are managed by commissioners of police, comprising a chief magistrate and 15 other members.
Langholm Castle, a plain square tower or peel-house, now a ruin, belonged to the Armstrongs, the powerful Border freebooters, and sent forth Johnnie Armstrong of Gilnockie, with his gallant company of thirty-six men, to disport themselves upon Langholm Holm, prior to their execution by James V. at Caerlanrig (1529).

 Scottish Gamekeepers Association - Langholm
I find constant reference by SNH and the RSPB to the loss of heather at Langholm since 1940 very tedious - it is obvious that they are diverting attention from the main problem, which is raptor predation of the grouse.
A report commissioned by SNH in 1997 (Averis and Averis) found that the heather on the Langholm grouse moors was in an improving or stable state, and that in the last ten years the rate of improvement had increased.
But I feel that the keepering profession, stalkers and shepherds, who spend so much of their working lives on the ground being surveyed, should be involved with the Groups in order to provide a more realistic finding of raptor numbers on our moorlands.
