Langlands & Bell have long been preoccupied with architecture, the way in which people used spaces and interact within them, but continue to treat these issues with a sort of detached, distanced curiosity.
During their time in Afghanistan, Langlands & Bell were clearly very struck by the number of NGOs that had been set up there — approximately 120 NGOs and UN agencies, plus 160 local Afghan NGOs in Kabul alone.
It is perhaps, then, no surprise that Langlands & Bell chose to portray a vision of war in which there is no ‘us’ versus ‘them’, no men in uniform, no fighting and dying — just an empty house, a trial we can’t really understand, and the abstracted acronyms of distant and distancing benevolence.

During an initial research visit to Mount Stuart artists Langlands and Bell came across the tiny and exquisitely detailed family chapel dedicated to St John the Evangelist and designed in 1873 by the renowned architect William Burges.
The structure is discretely, almost secretly located in one of two remaining sections of the old house, which survived the fire of 1877, and has previously remained inaccessible to visitors.
Langlands and Bell’s intention is to ‘re awaken’ the space through a full-scale mirrored installation, enabling people to focus on the role and history of the chapel, and its unique characteristics as an architectonic environment dedicated to the spiritual and to art.

The lighting of Station Bridge, Paddington was the result of a collaboration between internationally renowned artists, Ben Langlands and Nikki Bell, Lighting Architects Speirs and Major Associates and Structural Engineers Atelier One.
The structure was conceived as a work of art in light - both by day and night: a proscenium and stage on which the pedestrians provide the theatre as they move across the face of the massive, white structural steel and glass screen.
The lighting solution was not preconceived by the artists, rather Langlands and Bell and Speirs and Major Associates developed thoughts around the programme originally devised by the artists.
