Langley Air Force Base is among the oldest continuously active air bases in the United States.
Although short-lived, hydrogen-filled dirigibles played an important role in Langley's early history and a portion of the base is still referred to as the LTA (lighter-than-air) area.
The arrival of Tactical Air Command and jet aircraft marked the beginning of a new era in the history of the field, and in January 1948 Langley Field officially became Langley Air Force Base.

Langley Air Force Base (Langley AFB) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Langley Research Center (NASA LaRC) are located adjacent to each other in the heavily populated Hampton Roads area of southeastern Virginia, 100 miles south of Washington, DC (Figure 1).
Langley AFB and NASA LaRC are situated on the former plantation of George Wythe, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence (NASA LaRC, 1996).
Langley AFB occupies 3,152 acres and is bounded by the city of Hampton on the south, NASA LaRC on the west, and the northwest and southwest branches of the Back River to the north, south, and east (Figures 1 and 2).

Shaw AFB is the headquarters of the Ninth Air Force and home of the 20th Fighter Wing, whose mission is to provide, project, and sustain combat-ready air forces.
Operating from Al Dhafra Air Base as the 363rd Provisional Wing (along with the 10th TFS from the 50th TFW, Hahn Air Base, Germany), the wing flew combat missions to Iraq and Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm between January 17 and February 28, 1991.
The 20th FW, previously based at RAF Upper Heyford, UK, had phased out its F-111E operations and was transferred without personnel or equipment to Shaw, inheriting the personnel and aircraft of the former 363rd FW, which was then inactivated.

As one of three fighter squadrons of the 1st Fighter Wing, the 27th is tasked to provide air superiority for United States or allied forces by engaging and destroying enemy forces, equipment, defenses or installations for global deployment.
In June 1975, the 27th Tactical Fighter Squadron was moved to Langley Air Force Base, Va., becoming the first operational squadron to fly the F-15 Eagle air superiority fighter in 1976.
In 1975, the 71st moved to its current home with the 1st Fighter Wing at Langley Air Force Base, Va., where it was equipped with the F-15 Eagle air superiority fighter in 1976.
