A2Z Languages - French language programs - Canada - Country Guide - Country Overview
Until you have actually traveled around Canada, it is difficult to imagine how big and unspoiled it really is. It stretches from the Atlantic to the Pacific and from the latitude of Rome to beyond the Magnetic North Pole.
Like its neighbor to the south, Canada is a spectrum of cultures, a hotchpotch of immigrant groups who supplanted the continent's many native peoples.
By contrast, Eastern Canada mixes the flavor and charm of Europe with the bustle of trendy New York.

French as a Minority Language in Bilingual Canada
Canada is officially a bilingual country but, with nearly 60% of the population speaking English as their mother-tongue, and only 24% speaking French as their first language, some people are questioning whether Canada is truly a bilingual nation or rather, a bilingual nation on paper only.
This is because of a long history of French in Canada, with the original settlers coming from parts of France other than Paris, who continued to use the French from the Ancien Régime, while the Standard French in France used today evolved instead from 18th century bourgeois Parisian French.
But outside Québec, it is indeed a minority language, with 33.9% of the population speaking an Acadian variety of French, 4.4% in Manitoba, 4.1% in Ontario, and less than 2% in other provinces (Chevrier, 1997).

The Anishinaabe language or the Ojibwe group of languages or Anishinaabemowin (ᐊᓂᔑᓈᐯᒧᐎᓐ in Eastern Ojibwe syllabics) is the third most commonly spoken Native language in Canada (after Cree and Inuktitut), and the fourth most spoken in North America (behind Navajo, Cree, and Inuktitut).

One of these is the existence of archaisms, of old words and expressions that have disappeared or died out in France, such as the old weights and measures that were in use before the coming of the metrical system at the time of the French Revolution of 1789.

Origins Canada - Ditch the 'Respectful' Adoption Language
Origins Canada does NOT condone its use as a term for mothers separated from their children by adoption.
These mother feel the trauma of this reproductive exploitation every time they hear the term "birthmother," as it denigrates them and other exiled mothers into being merely incubators for their children, used and discarded after their babies were harvested from them by brokers.
In our email list, members have agreed by consensus to language that does not traumatize other members, and to not use language that was coined by the adoption industry in order to demean natural mothers or the mother/child relationship.
