Yet its population of fewer than 9,500 inhabitants, of which maybe a quarter were peasants, seems insignificant when compared to the estimate of the sub-delegate of the Vivarais that the upper half of his diocese contained twenty-thousand peasant households engaged in textile production in 1773.
Languedocien industry was still largely dispersed among the peasantry and left to its supervision.

Southern or Middle Occitan, which is divided primarily into Languedocien with northern, southern, eastern and western dialects, and Provençal to the east with three main subdivisions of Rhodanian around Arles, Avignon and Nîmes, and Provencal Maritime spoken around the Cote d'Azur, and Niçart spoken around Nice.
The Félibrigians are most often accused of passéisme, of wishing to preserve, from the safety of their ivory tower of intellectualism, the picturesque backwardness of Occitania, and of seeking in folkloric traditions a force to unite Occitania.
A post-World War II effort at standardization took as its model the Languedocien dialect; like the Félibrigian standard, the choice of one dialect as a model for all could only have overruled dialectical loyalty in a few urban intellectuals whose linguistic ties to the region were more symbolic or political than quotidian and authentic.

Soulan lies in right smack in the middle of the Gascon- Languedocien isogloss bundle, and in a very small area affected by some Couserannais sound changes, which makes the dialect about as stigmatized as it can be.
Even Pierre Bec, renowned author of the ultimate source on the Gascon-Languedocien boundary (Les Interferences entre le Gascon et le Languedocien) cringed at the sound of my "nonstandard" past participles.
On the one hand, it is similar to the national stigmatization of regional dialects altogether in the face of French.

But this is a mistake, Provençal is only spoken in south-eastern France (Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur), while Languedocien is spoken in the south-central of France (Languedoc and Midi-Pyrenées), and Gascon in the south-west (Aquitaine).
So more and more the term 'Occitan' is becoming synonymous with 'Languedocien' which is only adding to more disagreements in the use of the term 'Occitan'.
Centuries later, the languedocien writer Lois Alibert modernised written Occitan by using the works of mediaeval writers and poets as his foundation.

While skimming through "Grammaire Languedocienne" (available at http://www.claude.barret.net), I noticed that the author Léon LaMouche, in spelling out the Languedocien words, employed an orthography that seems to be very Mistralian.
But in other websites, including yours, Languedocien is spelled using the Alibert system.
Recently, I noticed that a further step had been reached : the languedocien is considered since 10 years as an unified language, and all the phonetic and syntaxic specificities of the montpelheirenc are now considered as irregularities that should be corrected.
