Lansdowne Road should host the UEFA Cup final in 2010 if its rebuilding is completed on time, the CEO of European football's governing body said today.
Work on redeveloping Lansdowne Road, which hosts Ireland's soccer and rugby internationals, is set to begin in January with completion of the new 50,000-seater stadium expected by 2009.
During the rebuilding of Lansdowne Road, Ireland will play their Euro 2008 qualifying games at the 80,000 state of the art Croke Park.

LANSDOWNE Road last night emerged as by far the most likely site for a new national sports stadium - if the price is right.
Lansdowne is in my opinion a superior location over Abbotstown - I'd way prefer a stadium in walking distance to town and more importantly on a DART line over some field with no transport links at all.
Lansdowne road, while a beautiful old stadium is not suitable, why not leave it intact as we in ireland seem to be protecting everything over 20 years old anyway, and keep it for club games, or smaller international games....just an idea...i liked the idea of changing it into apartments...

The 50,000-seater Lansdowne Road stadium redevelopment, partly funded by nearly €200 million of National Lottery money, will be ready by 2008, although it will face a two-year battle to win planning permission.
Lansdowne will have to close from late 2006 to allow the construction of the 50,000-seater stadium, which will be the same axis as the existing pitch - though it will move closer to the Dodder River.
The new Lansdowne stadium, which will cost nearly €300 million to build, will include 64 corporate boxes and 8,000 premium seats, as well as "substantially improved" behind-the-scenes facilities for players and spectators.

The French Rugby Federation had been planning to use Lansdowne Road as a base for one the groups, but with yesterday's announcement that the stadium will be unavailable due to redevelopment, they French are now a venue short.
