  Sea and Sky: Lanternfish
The lanternfish is a deep water fish that gets its name from its ability to produce light.
Lanternfish grow to a length of about 6 inches.
Lanternfish are found in all of the world oceans at depths ranging from 1200 to 3000 feet.

NOAA Ocean Explorer: Islands in the Stream
Lanternfish are a mesopelagic species that migrate from deep midwater (800-1,000 m) to shallower depths (200 - 300 m) at night.
Lanternfish are among the most abundant and diverse of all oceanic fish families.
They are commonly known as lanternfish, and they are among the most abundant and diverse of all oceanic fish families.

 DIALOG Dissertation Abstracts
These lanternfish aggregate in dense schools over the slope in spring and summer, migrating to the surface at dusk descending before dawn to depths between 300 - 500 m.
The concentrations of lanternfishes during spring and summer form the basis of a food chain supporting larger fishes such as blue grenadier (Macruronus novaezelandiae) and jack mackerel, and during summer, other larger lanternfish such as Diaphus danae.
Estimation of the relative biomass of zooplankton and micronekton from the main geographic and oceanographic regions of the area showed that the biomass of the shelf was significantly higher than that offshore.

 LANTERN FISHES. FAMILY MYCTOPHIDAE
The most distinctive external characters of the lanternfishes are their large eyes (situated close to the tip of the blunt snout), wide mouths gaping back beyond the eye, one soft-rayed dorsal fin, a deeply forked tail, and the presence of a series of luminous organs as conspicuous pale spots along the sides.
The species of Diaphus and of Myctophum all resemble one another in general appearance, in having a short dorsal fin, with an adipose fin behind it; a deeply forked tail; large eyes; wide, oblique mouth; and numerous luminous organs along the sides; all, too, are flish-silvery in color.
Should a lanternfish be taken in the Gulf in which the arrangement of luminous organs does not agree precisely with the two described here, we suggest that it be submitted to the U. Fish and Wildlife Service to be named.

Alien Biodiversity :: Astrobiology Magazine ::
At the end of the barbel is a bioluminescent organ the animals use like a fishing lure to attract prey, mainly lanternfish.
As astrobiologists speculate about diversity as one might imagine arising in unusual environments either terrestrially or on a distant, extrasolar planet, the discovery of new species in some of the most thoroughly studied places on Earth is noteworthy.
The new species is apparently rare enough to individualize the pattern of this lure also to identify itself to the opposite gender for what must be rare encounters for reproduction.
