Lantus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lantus is long-acting insulin analogue, usually given once a day, to help control the blood sugar level of those with diabetes.
The peakless profile of Lantus also enables the dose to be relatively higher than standard NPH insulin.
Because standard NPH is normally administered at night, its peak of action tends to coincide with the lower serum glucose levels associated with nocturnal metabolism.

 Lantus Insulin
Lantus differs from other insulins in that one asparagine at position A21 of the A chain is replaced by glycine, and two arginines have been added added to one end of the B-chain.
Lantus should be used with great caution and only under the supervision of a physician during pregnancy or prior to pregnancy.
Lantus may not work for everyone, but for the vast majority who are willing to take an extra injection or two a day in order to get terrific control, this insulin is definitely worth a try.

Diabetes 123 - Lantus (Insulin Glargine)
Lantus® (insulin glargine) is a new, very long acting insulin marketed by Aventis.
Like other new insulins, Lantus is an insulin analog, meaning that its molecular structure has been changed slightly, and it is this change that gives it the long lasting effect.
Another study concluded that Lantus was a better basal insulin than NPH when used as part of a basal-bolus regimen for patients with Type 1 diabetes.

Lantus (insulin glargine [rDNA] injection) Drug Brief / RxPalace.com
Indication(s): Lantus is indicated for once-daily subcutaneous administration at bedtime in the treatment of adult and pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus or adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who require basal (long-acting) insulin for the control of hyperglycemia.
However, when patients were transferred from twice-daily NPH human insulin to Lantus once daily at bedtime, to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia, the initial dose (IU) was usually reduced by approximately 20% (compared to total daily IU of NPH human insulin) within the first week of treatment and then adjusted based on patient response.
Dose adjustment of LANTUS and other insulins or oral antidiabetic drugs may be required; for example, if the patient’s weight or lifestyle changes or other circumstances arise that increase susceptibility to hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia.

Concern is mounting that oral or written orders for LANTUS may be mistaken as "Lente" insulin, which has a more rapid effect and shorter duration of activity than LANTUS.
For example, 16 units of Lente insulin is sometimes written as "L-16 units."  Since LANTUS also begins with an "L," it is possible that mix-ups with Lente insulin may occur.
In addition to concerns about the name, wrong time errors are also possible, as LANTUS is given at bedtime, not in the morning like other insulins.
