The more than two-decade struggle of the lumads (indigenous people) of Surigao del Sur against logging operations in their area escalated on March 4, 2005 when a truck loaded with freshly-cut logs on its way to Surigao Development Corporation (SUDECOR) log pond was intercepted by a town official and residents.
The logging operation that extends to five municipalities, namely Lanuza, Carmen, Madrid, Tandag and San Miguel, has led to the destruction of forests and mountains and disturbance of wildlife, thus tipping the balance of the ecosystem.
The logging conflict dates back to the early 70s and 80s when SUDECOR bulldozed an area in Kilometer 9 in Carmen, Surigao del Sur for its operation camp at Hubason watershed, causing an instant flashflood which gave rise to a strong opposition by residents.
