Migration of Lao workers to Thailand has increased significantly and trafficking of Lao people occurs against the background of high levels of irregular migration from Lao PDR to Thailand.
It is not known how many people are actually trafficked from Lao PDR but it appears that significant numbers of Lao people are being trafficked to Thailand, for the purposes of domestic servitude, sexual exploitation and exploitative labour, especially in factories and the fishing industries.
The Lao PDR Government established a specialist anti-trafficking unit in 2003 and the Government passed the Law on Woman’s Protection and Development which covers the crime of people-trafficking in October 2004.
