Laodicea   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The Laodiceans are nearly to the end of a long road that has led the church step by step, a little here, a little there, into apostasy.
Laodiceans are lukewarm about everything except their faith in the democratic principle of majority rule.
Laodiceans are not clothed in the righteousness of the saints; they do not even have on the clothes of their own self righteousness as did the Jews, they are completely naked.

The Development of the Canon of the New Testament - Epistle to the Laodiceans
This tantalizing reference, though somewhat ambiguous as to who wrote whom (see [Lightfoot] for a discussion), offers a tempting invitation to some unknown author to provide the text of an Epistle of Paul to the Laodiceans, who were the neighbors of the congregation at Colossae.
After the author has expressed his joy at the faith and virtue of the Laodiceans, he warns them against heretics, and exhorts them to remain faithful to Christian doctrines and the Christian pattern of life.
The Epistle to the Laodiceans is included in all 18 German Bibles printed prior to Luther's translation, beginning with the first German Bible, issued by Johann Mental at Strassburg in 1488.

LAODICEANS, EPISTLE TO THE in the Bible Encyclopedia - ISBE (Bible History Online)
The words used by the apostle may mean: (1) a letter written by the Laodiceans; (2) an epistle written by Paul from Laodicea; (3) an epistle written to the Laodiceans, and to be procured from them by the Colossians.
Of course, it closes with an injunction to the Laodiceans to exchange epistles with the Colossians.
NOTE: A very remarkable circumstance in regard to the apocryphal Epistle to the Laodiceans is mentioned by Nestle in the preface to his edition of the Latin New Testament, published in Stuttgart in 1906.

The Laodiceans aren’t accused of the doctrinal compromise of the church of Pergamos or even the moral sinfulness of the church in Thyatira, but they are still called the worst, Christ is not merely angry with the church in Laodicea, he is disgusted.
Christ says to the Laodiceans "I know your deeds" and the implication is that Christ knows their hearts and that he knows them better than men who might be fooled by outward appearances.
It is in the midst of Christ’s warning to all the churches that are like the Laodicean church, and the door that He is standing at is the door of the Church.

Christ counsels Laodiceans to "anoint thine eyes with eye-salve, that thou mayest see," Revelation 3:18, and it is ironic that the people who exported eye-salve needed to cure their own spiritual blindness.
Laodiceans are the weak, lukewarm Christians, and the only way to get them zestos, or boiling hot, is to chasten them.
But the Laodiceans are going to have to repent and come to Christ first; they have to open the door and admit they have been wrong.

The Laodiceans on the other hand are represented by the outer court, cast out by Christ due to their liberalism (Rev 3:19-29; 11:2).
But the Laodicean era is not only overcome by the world and arises during a time of increasing gentile dominance (Philadelphia arises during a time of the peak of the Israelitish powers), it also rejects truths once understood by the Philadelphian era.
From the context it is clear that half of the Laodicean Church will wake up to their shocking state, but only at the time of the Tribulation, while the other half will be shut out of the Kingdom.

Despite its insipid and suspicious character, this compilation was frequently copied in the Middle Ages, and enjoyed a certain degree of respect, although St. Jerome had written of it: ab omnibus exploditur.
Anyway, methinks that if Paul were so keen to have the letter to the Laodiceans read by the Colossians it would have been a richer text than the one posted.
Also, if it were that short Paul would have included it as an appendix to Colossians rather than ask the church there to go to the trouble of getting such a short piece of writing from another city.

There is yet a chance to remedy their state, and the Laodicean message is full of encouragement; for the backslidden church may yet buy the gold of faith and love, may yet have the white robe of the righteousness of Christ, that the shame of their nakedness need not appear.

It is well known that the words "at Ephesus" (Ephesians 1:1) in the inscription of the epistle are very doubtful.

It is interesting to make a comparison with the now existing fidelity of the letter to the Laodiceans, and with the letters of the Apostle which are contained in the New Testament regarding its linguistic correspondence.
The Laodiceans were backsliding just like the Colossians from a pure, spiritual Christianity into a ceremonious Church-Christianity, against which Paul in his letter makes a strong case with even stronger words.
The church of the early middle-ages could have been very sensitive towards these writings as being an accusation against their own secularized practices, and that is why they deleted this letter without hesitation.
