National Cathedral was built over 100 years ago and resides in an extremely populated part of Washington D.C. The general plan of the cathedral like the Laon Cathedral in France, is shaped in an axial cross plan.
Like many early cathedrals the National Cathedral employs the use of the Gothic Rib Vaults, which are a way of support for the ceiling (Kleiner and Mamiya 382).
Gardner's text exemplifies another consistency in decoration of the early cathedrals in relation to the National Cathedral with use of lancets, which are "tall narrow widows ending in pointed arches (383)".
