Steel guitar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Steel guitar refers to a method of playing on a guitar held horizontally, with the strings uppermost and the bass strings towards the player, and using a type of slide called a steel above the fingerboard rather than fretting the strings with the fingers.
Steel guitar technique also developed from bottleneck guitar, which is a similar technique to steel guitar but with the guitar held in the conventional position, and using a different form of slide to accommodate this playing position.
The term steel guitar should not be confused with steel-strung guitar, which is a standard acoustic guitar that has steel rather than the nylon or cat-gut strings used for classical guitar, and is built with extra bracing, a stronger neck, and higher-geared machine heads to cater for the much higher tension of steel strings.

LAP STEEL GUITAR: A lap steel guitar is one type of steel guitar.
The strings are elevated above the fretboard and rather than pressing the strings to the fretboard, you fret with a steel, or steel bar with the left hand, moving it up and down the strings to create a sliding sound while the right hand plucks the strings.
Because lap steel guitars are put on the lap, they can have almost any shape, from a simple square plank to a guitar-like shape.

The popular "pedal steel" is the most commonly used of the steel guitars in Nashville and other recording centers.
The earlier lap steels are enjoying something of a comeback these days, what with the resurgence of interest in country swing and other period music.

The majority of the book consists of interviews by the author with contemporary lap steel players, both acoustic and electric.

It was interesting reading about peoples' approach to lap steel and thoughts on where it fits in the world of music.

Brad's Page of Steel - Tunings
The low bass G tuning is used by Bob Brozman on his National steel guitars.
This tuning has the advantage that it is only different from the standard guitar tuning on one string (hey, it makes it easier for those learning steel as a second language), yet gives easy one-fret bar positionings of all major and minor chords in the standard folk and country keys.
The good thing about experimenting with tunings on a lap steel is you cannot make the neck go out of adjustment by tuning the strings too high.

I realised the relationship with fret positions relative to a standard fretted guitar, but I wasnt sure if the same ratio applied to a lap steel of same scale length.
Leo, the frets are in the same place as a regular guitar of the same scale length and the centre of the bar needs to be directly above the fret.
What can be confusing is your viewing angle changes as you move the bar along the neck, so at the bottom end it looks like it's behind the fret, but it looks closer to the fret as you move up the neck.

The Lap Steel Guitar has been called..."the most expressive and toneful instrument ever conceived".
My only gripe is that much of the music deviates from what is known as the "lap steel guitar" (a relatively small electrified six to 10 string instrument), offering various slide guitar and resonator guitar songs as well.
I was not disappointed with the sound, but thought that they could have either called it something else or included more actual lap steel guitars on the record.
