  Laphroaig - no half measures
Laphroaig's peat bogs on the Glenmachrie Peat Moss and it's water source, the Kilbride Dam, combine in the distilling process to produce the characteristically peaty and full-coloured whisky that features in the top five best-selling malts today.
Laphroaig (la-froyg)- Gaelic for "the beautiful hollow by the broad bay" - boasts, as its name demands, an idyllic setting for a Distillery, with its own sea loch and peninsula.
Laphroaig goes from strength to strength as part of Allied Distillers' portfolio and received the Queen's Award for Export Achievement in 1994.

Islay Laphroaig Malt Whisky Distillery. Pictures and distillery tour info
The Laphroaig distillery (the name means "the beautiful hollow by the broad bay") was established in 1815, by Alex and Donald Johnston.
Since 1994 Laphroaig has been the only whisky to carry the Royal Warrant of HRH, Prince Charles of Wales (the 15-year-old is reportedly his favourite scotch whisky), which was awarded in person during a visit to the distillery.
Laphroaig is considered one of the most strongly flavored of all scotch whiskies, and is generally aged to 10 years, although the 15 year old variety is not uncommon (the 30 and 40 year olds, however, are).

 Laphroaig
Laphroaig (Gaelic: "The beautiful hollow by the broad bay") has its own peat-beds on Islay and a beautifully-maintained floor maltings at the distillery.
I once heard a curious anecdote about Laphroaig, which I haven't been able to confirm: Apparently during the American prohibition on alcohol they stopped importation of Scotch, but some of the most phenolic stuff (ie Laphroaig) managed to slip through the net: It was imported as a *disinfectant*.
I don't know about the disinfectant story but Laphroaig was the single best selling whisky legally during prohibition in the U.S. It was prescribed to those in need of medicinal alcohol (probably because it has been described as smelling of gauze).

Laphroaig Single Malt Scotch 40 Year
The isle of Islay is a windswept juxtaposition of rock, peat and heather, cast adrift from the Scottish mainland to the East.
The unique character of Laphroaig® has never been duplicated, even by the distillery’s closest neighbours, but is partly derived from the distillery’s location on the spray soaked coast, as well as the peat which flavours the water and smokes the barley.
Iain Henderson, Laphroaig's current Distillery Manager, had this to say, "Laphroaig® 40 Year Old is a superlative whisky from one of the greatest periods in our history, with a distinctiveness you would expect from the crowning addition to the Laphroaig® family.

UISGE! Laphroaig Distillery: All about it
Laphroaig is arguably the distinstive Islay malt, a pungent, primal, classy spirit that has come to embody not only the traditional style associated with the island but also the smell and earthy impact that the rest of the world regards as the essential persona of Scotch malt whisky.
Before single malts were properly marketed in bottles, it was Laphroaig that the pundits had in mind when they said that consumers could not cope with such a thrusting, uncompromising whisky, and that they would have to be weaned on to it via the gentle Obans and Dalwhinnies of the world.
Ardenistiel was later incorporated into Laphroaig when it failed, largely due to the neglect of the manager who was more interested in using the kilns to produce smoked ham during the distillery’s silent season.

Laphroaig continued to be popular as a Single Islay Malt Whisky and also much in demand as a blending whisky.
Laphroaig then became part of the Whitbread Brewing Empire, later called James Burrough Limited on the acquisition of Beefeater Gin.In 1990 James Burrough Limited was purchased by Allied Distillers Limited and thus joined Ballantines and Hiram Walker to become the second biggest whisky distillers in Scotland.

 Laphroaig
The whiskies from Laphroaig can certainly never be accused of being the quiet ones; they’re in your face, grab your attention, take hold of your taste-buds, get them in a headlock, strangle them, assault them and kick them, then gradually soothe them and caress them until you start the process all over again.
Laphroaig, pronounced “La-Froyg”, is Gaelic for ‘The Beautiful Hollow by the Sea (or ‘by the Broad Bay’ depending on the translation)’, and the whiskies are aged in Bourbon barrels.
The Douglas Laing and Co 16 y/o bottling is harder to find and quite expensive and the Laphroaig 30 y/o is called ‘extremely rare’ and it is indeed very hard to find and costs $740 a bottle.
