Two ships of the United States Navy have borne the name USS Lapon, named in honor of the lapon, a scorpion fish of the Pacific coast of America.
The first Lapon, (SS-260), was a Gato-class submarine, commissioned in 1943 and struck in 1975.
The second Lapon, (SSN-661), was a Sturgeon-class submarine, commissioned in 1967 and struck in 1992.

Upon commissioning, Lapon reported to Commander Submarine Force Atlantic Fleet tor duty, with her homeport at Norfolk, Va. She spent most of 1968 going through training programs and cruising along the east coast of the United States.
Into 1969, she is preparing for a Mediterranean deployment and will join the 6th Fleet.

The LAPON was assigned to the Search and Rescue for the SCORPION.
The mission was delayed for a week, and it was during this time I wrote the song "SCORPION." The loss of the SCORPION, as with the loss of the THRESHER, deeply touched the hearts of all men who served in submarines.
The authors had included a few lines about my service aboard the LAPON in the book along with a photo of the front and back of the record album cover.

During his tour he served as Communications Officer, Chemistry and Radiological Controls Assistant and Damage Control Assistant as LAPON completed deployments to the North Atlantic and Indian Ocean.
In March 1993 he was assigned as the Submarine Liaison Officer/ASW Officer for Commander, Carrier Group Seven and deployed with the USS NIMITZ Battle Group in support of Operation Southern Watch.
In October 1994 he transferred to the United States Strategic Command (J6) in Omaha, Nebraska where he was the staff action officer for Submarine Communications and Tactical Warning and Attack Assessment systems.
