Lapu-Lapu City, located on the northern part of Mactan Island, is bounded by the Magellan Bay on the north, the Mactan Channel on the west, the Hilutungan Channel on the East, and the Municipality of Cordova on the South.
Lapu-Lapu City, formerly the Municipality of Opon, was founded by the Augustinian missionaries in 1730.
Got re-elected in 1931 Lapu Lapu monument was bult by Rito de la Serna, who also bult the old tennis court and beautified the Rizal Plaza.

Lapu-Lapu, chartered city of the central Philippines, in Cebu Province, on the western coast of Mactan Island.
Lapu-Lapu lies about 5 km (about 3 mi) across Cebu Harbor from the city of Cebu and is part of the Cebu metropolitan area.
In 1886 a monument to Magellan was erected at the site of the conflict, and a monument to Chief Lapulapu stands in the citys plaza.

One of the oldest monuments in the province, the Magellan monument in Barangay Mactan (Lapu-Lapu City) traces its origin to December 4, 1840, when Spanish Governor-General Francisco Alcala approved the plan to construct a monument in Punta Engaño, Mactan, in honor of Ferdinand Magellan, the Portuguese “discoverer” of the Philippines.
Cebu city is a 45 to 60 minute drive from most resorts; longer if traffic is bad.
The majority of restaurants on Mactan are situated along the main road leading to the airport which is typically a 15-20 minute drive from the resorts.

In his honor, the Cebuano people have erected a statue and church in Mactan Island and also renamed the town of Opon in Cebu to Lapu-Lapu City.

After the war, Dimataga served again as the Municipal Mayor from 1945 up to 1961 when Opon became the chartered city of Lapu-Lapu.
He continued to serve as the chief executive (as City Mayor) until his retirement in 1968.
