  1 Nephi 9
Nephi, as the head of the political aspect of his people, would have been the one to sanctify the plates by his possession of them and the rulership.
Nephi begins to make the distinction between the content value of the official Plates of Nephi (known to us as the large plates of Nephi) and the unofficial plates (small "p") of Nephi (known to us as the small plates of Nephi).
Nephi is now finished with his brief description of the textual sources, has explained why the small plates are unique, and perhaps has justified them as his own personal account.

Nephi is using the large plates as a source for the small plates.
Nephi may have stopped writing the large plates at this point and passed it on or he may have continued it himself in parallel with the small plates until his death.
Nephi probably separated the recording of the two sets of plates just previous to death with the responsibility for the small plates going to Jacob and the responsibility for the large plates going to the king.

 Mormon Plates and Records
The various plates and records referred to in the Book of Mormon and used in making it are (1) the plates of brass; (2) the record of Lehi; (3) the large plates of Nephi 1; (4) the small plates of Nephi; (5) the plates of Mormon; and (6) the twenty-four gold plates of Ether.
The plates of brass were the basic scriptures of the Nephite nation, and for centuries their prophets read them, quoted them in sermons, and excerpted material from them to enrich their own writings.
Mormon included the small plates with his record when he delivered the plates of Mormon to his son Moroni because their witness of Christ pleased him and because he was impressed by the Spirit of the Lord to include them "for a wise purpose" (W of M 1:3-7).

 Gospel Doctrine:"For a Wise Purpose"": Lesson 14
The purpose of the small plates of Nephi was, in the language of our day, take "the best of" the prophesies and revelations of Nephi, Lehi and other prophets of their family, and gather them together in one place.
The plates of brass, never referred to as the brass plates, are the record of the children of Joseph of Egypt and are the plates Nephi and his brothers were sent back to Jerusalem to retrieve from Laban.
It was upon these plates that Mormon made an abridgement of the records of Nephi (including the large plates of Nephi and the attachment of the small plates of Nephi).

He includes the small plates with his plates, writes the insert known as the words of Mormon, and then continues on to abridge the huge history which lay before him in the Large Plates of Nephi.
It is not surprising, therefore, for Mormon to approve of the contents of the Small Plates of Nephi, for these two spiritual heroes, Mormon and Nephi, had similar desires for the welfare of their people and for the recipients of the Book of Mormon in the last days.

Nephi is reminded of the original twelve from the vision, and shown the twelve in the New World.
Nephi sees the termination of his seed, and notes that the cause is their pride and the temptations of the devil.
Nephi also sees that the seed of his brethren will continue and be capable of being defined as "multitudes." It is interesting that this is still not placed "on the map." It is entirely unclear is Nephi knows where these multitudes will be.

Evolutionary Development for the Structure of the Book of Mormon by Quinn Brewster
In the third configuration, the plates of Lehi (separate and distinct from Nephi's plates) were understood to be an additional source for some of the material contained in the lost manuscript (such as Lehi's genealogy).
And, in the fourth and final configuration, Nephi's plates were understood to consist of separate large and small versions, with the small plates taking the role of the replacement forepart and the large plates subsuming Lehi's plates and taking over the role of source record for all the lost manuscript material.
If the phrase "plates of Nephi" in verses 39-40 had been intended to mean the inclusive set, then verse 41 would not have used the same ambiguous phrase, but would have made clear that only part of that set (the small record) was to be translated as a replacement.

Of course there is a conceptual difference between the two in that Helaman may write upon the plates of Nephi, but not upon the plates of brass.
This suggests that the small plates may have been included in the records of Benjamin’s reign, and were otherwise no longer separated from the large plate tradition.
This instruction to keep the original plates may have been something akin to keeping the original evidence, in case it was needed to corroborate the translation.

Large Plates of Nephi - Definition, explanation
In Mormonism, the Large Plates of Nephi (pronounced nee-fie) are alleged to be a collection of writings created by ancient inhabitants of the American Continent.

Those plates were to be used for the history of the people: their wars, kings, etc.
