Large Professor :: 1st Class :: Matador Records
"Large Pro" is a mess, with P dropping ridiculous braggadocio like "this'll be the hottest shit you ever heard" over an unconvincing bassline and some whiny synthesque sounds that are probably the bleeting of electronic sheep.
Speaking of tarnished, Large Professor has dug himself a hole with this album that it's going to be hard to come out from.
The rest of the album doesn't though, which means that although the title is "1st Class" Large Professor only paid for coach, and you're in for a very bumpy ride.

 Main source - Rap Dictionary
Extremely significant for 1991's Breaking Atoms alone, Main Source's effect on hip-hop is nearly impossible to gauge, especially when considering Large Professor and K-Cut's contributions outside of the group.
Consisting of MC/producer Large Professor (born Paul Mitchell) and twin DJs/producers K-Cut (born Kevin McKenzie) and Sir Scratch, the New York group came together in 1989 and debuted on Wild Pitch with Breaking Atoms — an undeniably classic album, regardless of its field — two years later.
While Gang Starr's DJ Premier is commonly heralded as a groundbreaking sampler and beatmaker, it was Large Professor and K-Cut who schooled him on how to master the SP1200.

Large Professor: 1st Class: Pitchfork Record Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
Large Pro still packs his tracks with that '93 flavor, and those of you who were around in '93 know that this isn't a bad thing.
Large Pro delivers a simple boom-bap beat with harmonizing gospel vocals turned down real low in the mix to affect a smoothly reflective mood.
His flow is a bit monotone and stale-- imagine Guru with a little more bass and a little less variance-- and his lyrics are rather insular and rarely reference anything outside of the world of hip-hop, with a noted exception being the sadly nostalgic verse he drops on "In the Sun".

Large Professor   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
Large Professor cut his teeth as a MC/producer with the notorious NYC/Toronto trio Main Source in the late '80s and early '90s.
Large Professor's talent at beat science remains as prodigious as ever, as does his ability to arrange a track around the skills of any given MC.
His beats are smooth-flowing and as large as his name, his production simple and free of gimmick, neither old-school nor new-school, but simply timeless.

 :: MVRemix: Album Reviews - Large Professor - 1st Class ::
With "First Class" Large Professor shows why he is one of the most talented producers in the game, and also why he sticks to producing not rapping.
Large Pro has never been one of the best lyricists in the game, and unfortunately that takes away from some of the tracks, as they become somewhat boring after multiple listens.
Large Professor showcases a great mix of production throughout the albums entirety as we get those hard-core Hip Hop tracks we all love, "Radioactive", "Blaze Rhymes" and especially "The Man".

Large Professor: 1st Class - PopMatters Music Review
Adding insult to injustice was the fact that Large Pro had put together two whole records worth of solo material for Geffen by the mid-'90s, all of which remains unissued to this day with the exception of two 12-inches.
Large Pro doesn't change his tune over the course of the entire record, preferring to carry the load with one of the most dispassionate takes on the boasting tradition ever committed to disc.
Deep in the record, the Professor finally delivers some redeeming moments in the form of "Large Pro" and "Alive in Stereo", two tracks that, despite not being able to shake the disc's dismal lyrical trend, are vintage Extra P in terms of production.

I'm sure when Large Professor ended his guest verse on A Tribe Called Quest's 'Keep It Rollin' with this line, he didn't anticipate how long we would have to wait before having a chance to cop his album.
Large Professor's lyrics meanwhile follow the blueprint he laid down on his Main Source debut - clear, concise, and to the point delivered in the trademark casually arrogant Extra P manner.
There's a sequence of tracks in the middle of this joint that illustrate exactly how dope Large Professor is both as an emcee and a producer.

Listening to "1st Class", one realizes not only has the Large Pro been gone for a while, but he hasn't been keeping up with the sophistication of rhyme schemes and patterns these days.
Unfortunately this is the arena in which Large Professor falls short.
As a producer Pete Mitchell has proven his worth, but as he aptly stated eon's ago - "A wack nigga rhymin' / Kills a raw beat." If you are a big fan of the Large Professor, you may enjoy his work for what it is, if not you may want to skip this Class.

Large Professor - The LP - Oh Word
A poorly-pressed vinyl edition of Large Professor’s shelved solo album (originally slated for a 1995 release on Geffen) made rounds on the bootleg circuit in the late 90s, generating even more hype for the long-awaited magnum opus by the genius behind the Main Source.
The musical promise and innovation, (if not necessarily the surprising lyrical acumen) that Large Pro displayed on Main Source’s Breakin’ Atoms is present on this album, and he even lets his guard down to craft a more eclectic range of sounds.
On the majority of The LP, Large Pro sounds a bit too subdued on the mic, and listeners looking for verses as venomous as those on “Snake Eyes” will be disappointed.

Back in 1993, on A Tribe Called Quest's "Keep It Rollin'," Large Professor assuredly proclaimed "Queens represent, buy the album when I drop it." Nine years, a botched-and-buried Geffen release fittingly titled The LP and a series of random guest shots later, his first true solo album, 1st Class, drops.
As with most songs featuring merely Large Professor, the subject matter is limited to bigheaded assertions.
Large Professor would have been better served to release an instrumental LP of straight bangers, or to let his more verbally and lyrically astute friends handle the rapping.

 Large Professor :: The LP :: {no label available}
In the entertainment biz, video games that are developed but never finished and/or released are described as "prototypes." Video games that are promoted but never released are referred to as "vaporware." Large Professor's "The LP" exhibits both of these qualities.
Large Pro was at one time signed to Geffen Records in the 1990's, which heavily advertised his "forthcoming album" even though they never released one; so it's definitely "vaporware" too.
Too many great rap albums have been lost over the years for this reason, but maybe some day Large Pro will be able to do a Nas style "Lost Tapes" and give this one the proper release it truly deserves.
