Operating Cameraman Online: Large Format Cinematography
In recent years the number of large format 2-D and 3-D films produced have doubled, and the continued increase in public interest is fueling the financial success of the large format in the US and abroad.
However, large format filmmakers are inventing new tools as they have been for the last 30 years and in so doing are creating a new form of cinema with its own grammar and language.
In large format 3-D you have the third level which is the physical component to the participation, which in effect creates a new language of cinema where audiences react to the images on the screen just like they would react to a live concert or stage play.

 Large Formats
Originally developed by the Imax Corporation in 1970, this format uses 70mm film run through the projector horizontally, so that the width of the film is the height of the frame.
In all other LF and conventional formats, the film runs vertically, so that the width of the film is the width of the frame.
The 8/70 format runs vertically, with a frame that is about 38mm high and 52mm wide (1.5 inches by 2 inches.) Because 8/70 uses about half as much film per minute as 15/70, shooting in 8/70 is less expensive and prints are about half the cost of 15/70 prints.

View Camera Getting Started In Large Format
The craft of photography is emphasized as part of the large format process, and you will have opportunities for creative control that have been unavailable to you by using fixed or nonadjustable cameras and roll film.
Contrary to medium and small format equipment, where you can buy almost any camera body and then add any lens at a later time, in large format you should first decide on the range of lenses you want to use and then select the camera body that will accommodate them.
The 5x7 format can use a wide range of lenses, from wide angles designed for the 4x5 to long lenses for the 8x10 assuming that the camera has the capability in terms of bellows length and short lens focusing ability.

 Large format downsides
Large format users routinely use front tilt to help solve their persistent depth-of-field problems, and scrupulously use front rise instead of angling the entire camera.
Second, a good large format negative is easier to print than one which is equally good but smaller.
Finally there is the old argument that large format allows the photographer to develop each sheet of film separately — individually is the term usually employed, to take advantage of the connotations of special attention, which relate, in turn, to the idea of the photographic print as a fine-art object.

 What's Large Format
Large format cameras most often use "sheet film" which as the name implies comes in individual sheets rather than in rolls.
The most common film size, by far, for large format photography is four by five inches.
That large size translates to a huge amount of detail that can be captured by a view camera and just as important, a huge amount of "tonality".

 Large Format primer: basics
Large image size: 4x5 inches (10x12cm), the most popular format by far, up to 20x24 inches (the Polaroid camera, which can be rented on-site for a reasonable fee).
On the other hand, with almost all the large format cameras it is possible to use roll-film holders of various sizes and to therefore produce medium-format images.
Large format photography is actually not that expensive, especially compared to medium format photography (the prices for the 35mm market are influenced by the fact that it is quite consumer-oriented), and a good large format system can be built for no more than a good modern medium format system.

To get the best quality large format print it helps to start with a large format camera.
With a medium format image (120 or 220 size film, 6x6 to 6x9, or, with roll film holder on a 4x5 camera, 6x12 cm) no good entry level scanner will do a professional quality job, since 600x1000 dpi will not do much to enlarge a 2 1/4 inch transparency to large format.
It would be worthwhile comparing digital shots with film shots in large format, using a rollfilm holder to simulate the field of the digital capture.
Over the last two years of testing large format printers and large format cameras we found that L-shaped cameras sagged from the considerable weight of the digital insert combined with the drag of the SCSI cables.
