Ribosomal RNA - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) is the central component of the ribosome, the protein manufacturing machinery of all living cells.
The function of the rRNA is to provide a mechanism for decoding mRNA into amino acids (at center of small ribosomal subunit) and to interact with the tRNAs during translation by providing petidyltransferase activity (large subunit).
Ribosomal RNA characteristics are important in medicine and in evolution.

Ribosomes are the particles that catalyze mRNA-directed protein synthesis in all organisms.
Many of ribosomal proteins, particularly those of the large subunit, are composed of a globular, surfaced-exposed domain with long finger-like projections that extend into the rRNA core to stabilize its structure.

 Ribosomal Protein Gene in Yeast
The MRPL28 gene in Saccharomyces cerevisiae encodes for a protein that is found on the large ribosomal subunit on the mitochondrial ribosome.
Ribosomes are involved in the synthesis of proteins in cells, and can occur in three main subcellular locations - the cytosol, the endoplasmic reticulum, and the mitochondria.
The study of the effects of changes in ribosomal proteins is a very important one, as ribosomal proteins are extremely far "upstream" in cellular pathways.
