While I was looking at the lark sparrow, I heard a voice calling "hello there" so I responded with a hello even though I didn't see the person.
She called her cat, a nice looking gray tabby wearing a red collar, and said "my kitty's a bird hunter too." (Notice to all sparrows, get the heck out of there.) Hmm, my cat is a bird hunter too, that's why I keep him indoors (well, that and his predilection for dumpster diving).

When I raised my binoculars, I was surprised to find a Lark Sparrow less than 15 ft. in front of me. The identity was confirmed when the bird turned around on the honeysuckle branch to reveal its striking chestnut, fl and white head pattern and its large central breast spot.
I found a Chipping Sparrow, Song Sparrow, House Finches and House Sparrows foraging on the ground adjacent to the road beneath a large oak.
Not finding the Lark Sparrow, I retreated back down the hill when the white outer tail feathers caught my eye again.

This handsome sparrow from the western United States was discovered frequenting a farm just a few miles north of Chambersburg on January 10, where it remained for at least the next ten days when these pictures were taken.
It proved quite cooperative and photogenic, along with the large group of White-throated and White-crowned Sparrows with which it has taken up residence.
Lark Sparrows, a common sight west of the Mississippi River, are casual in Pennsylvania, with a few dozen records over the years, but records are scarce in winter, with just two accepted occurrences before this one.

The above along with records from other years suggests that unlike other sparrows, Lark Sparrows (at least in northwest AR) migrate in late July and early August for the most part.
It was found in unusual habitat for winter; in semi-residential/upland forest habitat, feeding alongside White-throated Sparrows in small bare patches on a dirt road.
Bordering the road on one side was a large garden plot while there was a small patch of dense woody cover that included much multiflora rose on the other side.
