Earthbound and Beyond ~ Larks' Tongues in Aspic
For some, Larks' Tongues in Aspic signaled Robert Fripp's heroic return as an artist and his re-creation of King Crimson was seen as a Promethean feat.
Intuition is symbolized by the language of the birds and the song of the gulls.
The story told on Larks' Tongues in Aspic seems to be that of a man oscillating between sin and redemption, outer and inner, flesh and spirit and in Exiles, the protagonist, chastened by a failed relationship, finds himself in exile, alone, a stranger in a strange land.

Ground and Sky review - King Crimson - Larks' Tongues in Aspic
This may be an unpopular opinion, but I prefer the version of "Lark's Tongues, pt 1" on the Frame by Frame boxed set, where Fripp wisely edited out a bit of noodling and made it a tighter track.
The quintet that recorded Larks' Tongues in Aspic (their fifth studio album), though short-lived, was a wonder to behold.
Also, props must be given to the hair-raising intensity of "Larks' Tongues in Aspic, part two," a gloriously brutal Sabbath-cum-Stravinsky piece written by Robert Fripp, featuring a wailing Cross solo not for the faint of heart and ending with a scorching final chord that will peel the paint off your walls.

Larks' Tongues in Aspic is one of the staple progressive rock recordings.
The album opens with some atmospheric, meandering percussion which gradually builds into the first number, "Larks' Tongues in Aspic Part 1", which alternates between softer passages controlled by violin and the harsh guitar riffs of Robert Fripp.
This is probably the least heavy of the mid-period Crimson albums, but offers a mix of styles, in all of which the band is greatly proficient.

The piece Larks' Tongue in Aspic, part 2, is needless to say a classic because it pushes the ear to accept the lumbering, maniacal chording and riffery that this little ditty is full of.
LTIA Part One is well-constructed instrumental piece, but last 8 minutes of the album Red or the track Fracture outclass it.
Larks Tongues In Aspic is by far the best Crimson album, Part 1 sends shivers down the spine everytime, brilliant.

Larks' Tongues in Aspic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Larks' Tongues in Aspic is the title of a 1973 album by the British progressive rock group King Crimson.
The title was invented by percussionist Jamie Muir and is meant to signify what he heard in this album's music: something fragile and delicate encased in something corrosive and acidic.
The album opens with a long experimental instrumental piece titled "Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Part One".

"Larks' Tongues In Aspic (Part One)"--This is the first of three instrumentals on the disc.
For someone accustomed to the melodic progressions of Pink Floyd and (occasionally) Yes, LTIA came as a rude shock with its abrupt dynamic shifts and uneasy mixture of delicacy and brute force.
In 1972, Robert Fripp must have decided he'd had enough of "Islands"-style directionless classical-rock noodling/cacophony, because "Larks' Tongues", recorded with a completely new band of highly professional musicians, is focused and hard-hitting.

After the transitional ISLANDS, LARK'S TONGUES began the third Crimson phase that ended with RED.
The quartet of David Cross, John Wetton, Robert Fripp and Bill Bruford (augmented on LARK'S TONGUES by madman percussionist Jamie Muir) is regarded as the most innovative of Crimson's many lineups, offering hard-edged improvisations on an unprecedented level.
LARK'S TONGUES marked a new direction for the band and is easily among their finest efforts.

With LTIA the Crims decided to become an avant-rock rather than a symphonic-rock band that could play intense and complex instumental workouts, a la Larks' Tongue in Aspic parts 1 and 2 and beautiful ballads such as Book of Saturday with equal facility.
The music of LTIA is much more personal, muscular and dark than that of the vast majority of their contemporaries and Crimsons' own previous work.
However this was not the case a year later Larks Tongues in Aspic was released to the world and what an album it is. Completely departing from Crimsons former somber symphonic style, Lark's is an avant garde masterpiece that is absolutely drenched in darkness as well as beauty.

Robert Fripp is overseeing a continuing program of archival release for King Crimson, including the much praised Nightwatch, a live recording of the Larks' Tongues In Aspic lineup.
Not being a huge fan of that improv-based period of the Crim, I passed on that, but jumped at the chance to hear the 80s variant of the band, responsible for one of my all time favorite albums, Discipline.
Most of the material is from the three releases by this lineup (Discipline, Beat, and Three of a Perfect Pair) and includes "Larks' Tongues in Aspic" and "Red".

Lest they be overlooked, the roles of Cross and Muir are equally important, expanding the range of what might be considered music and giving Larks a decidedly Eastern and adventurous flavor.
Larks is a reinvention of the band that stays true to their original mission statement.
Larks does the same, substituting “1973” for “1969,” which as it turns out makes quite a difference.

I don't think it's as successful as Larks' Tongues, however, although it's miles above most of the music that was coming out in 1974 (or since, for that matter).
Like Larks' Tongues, most of this album is instrumental, although the "The Great Deceiver" -- a cranking KC tune if there ever was one -- features John Wetton on vocals, as does "Lament," a song that starts off on the gentle side of KC, but then goes through several meter changes.
Finally, "Fracture" is a cousin to the previous album's title song, "Larks' Tongues In Aspic," though it's more musically subtle, spending much of its 11 minutes on the quiet side.

Crimson's fifth studio album, once again changes in the line-up, something to get used to in the history of King Crimson.
Do remember though, Crimson isn't all about him, every member's input is important, here too of course but the fact that everyone here are excellent musicians (especially the singer/bassist, John Wetton) doesn't make that a problem.

The version of King Crimson that released Larks’ Tongues In Aspic (DGM, 1973) was by far the heaviest and most guitar-centric version of Crimson to date.
But, interestingly enough, Muir would prove to be the most extroverted showman the group ever had; leaping around the stage with chains, dressed in an animal skin and spewing fake blood.
Fripp may have been moving towards a more assertive edge with this version of Crimson, but “Peace-A Theme” proves (as does “Book Of Saturday” from Larks’ Tongues In Aspic) that he was still capable of lyrical elegance and delicate grace.

However, with "Larks' Tongues in Aspic-Part IV," Crimson rediscovers the psycho-metal of its 1969 classic, "21st Century Schizoid Man," exnays that song's ersatz jazz BS and goes berserk in an artistically stunning, one might even say progressive, manner.
