Joseph Larmor   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Larmor held that the flow of charged particles constitutes the current (A steady flow (usually from natural causes)) of conduction (The transmission of heat or electricity or sound) (but was not part of the atom ((physics and chemistry) the smallest component of an element having the chemical properties of the element)).
Larmor calculated the rate of energy ((physics) the capacity of a physical system to do work; the units of energy are joules or ergs) radiation (Energy that is radiated or transmitted in the form of rays or waves or particles) from an accelerating (additional info and facts about accelerating) electron.
Larmor explained the splitting of the spectral line (additional info and facts about spectral line) s in a magnetic (additional info and facts about magnetic) field (A piece of land cleared of trees and usually enclosed) by the oscillation ((physics) a regular periodic variation in value about a mean) of electrons.

Joseph Larmor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Larmor rejected both the curvature of space and the special theory of relativity, to the extent that he claimed that an absolute time was essential to astronomy (Larmor 1924, 1927).
Larmor proposed that the aether could be represented as a homogeneous fluid medium which was perfectly incompressible and elastic.
Larmor believed the source of charge was a "particle" (which as early as 1897 he was refering to as the electron).

Larmor explained the Fitzgerald contraction independently of Hendrik Lorentz (as he developed the Lorentz transformations in 1898).
Larmor rejected both the curvature of space and the special theory of relativity.
Larmor believed the source of charge was from a "particle" (later named the electron).

 Larmor
Larmor's contributions came at a time when there were major revolutions in physics with the passing of classical physics to be replaced by quantum theory and relativity.
Larmor wrote Aether and Matter in 1900 (renamed by Lamb Aether and no matter) which was a winning entry for the Adams Prize at Cambridge in 1898.
Larmor was active in college affairs, being a member of the council of St John's College for many years.

The corresponding intensity at the suns surface is 4~62XI04 as great, or 679XIo4 kilowatts per square metre = 7~88 X I0~ horse-power per square yardenough to melt a thickness of 133 metres (=39.6 ft.) of ice, or to vaporize i~8I metres (=5.92 ft.) of water per minute.
This shift towards the red J. Larmor suggests is due to relaxation of the spring of the surrotincling ether by reason of the crowding of the molecules; a shift of 0.17 tenth-metres would, if interpreted by Dopplers principle, have been read as a receding velocity of 11 km.
It is clear that these results may give a simple key to some puzzling anomalies, and on the other hand, they may throw a measure of uncertainty over absolute determinations of line-of-sight velocities.

Larmor formula - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Larmor formula is used to calculate the power radiated by a nonrelativistic electron as it accelerates.
For velocities that are small relative to the speed of light, the total power radiated is given by the Larmor formula:
When a charged particle accelerates, it must either emit or absorb a photon, forming a pulse of electromagnetic radiation.

This formula may now be extended by simple summation to a mixture of gases, on the ground of Dalton's experimental principle that each of the components behaves in presence of the others as it would do in a vacuum.
The same formula also applies, by what has already been stated, to sub-stances in dilute solution in any given solvent.
In any isolated system in a mobile state of reaction or of internal dissociation, the condition of chemical equilibrium is that the available energy at constant temperature is a minimum, therefore that it is stationary, and slight change arising from fresh reaction would not sensibly alter it.

Radiating self-levitating charge   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Also, I think that if the particle is suspended, it's not moving and won't radiate at all by Larmor's formula with a=0.
If you use the Abraham-Lorentz radiation reaction formula and Newtons law of gravity, you can model the radiating self-levitating charge as follows: Fg = -Frad Gm1m2/r^2 = u0q^2/6pic da/dt where m1 = mass of gravitational source m2 = mass of charge Since da/dt is rate of change of the gravitational acceleration, da/dt evaluates to -Gm1/r^3.
Example, the charge required to levitate a particle with electron mass at earth surface gravity is 1.61E-4 C, which is the charge of 1 000 000 000 000 000 electrons precisely.

 LESSON 02
Yet, your teachers will persist in telling you that there is such energy radiation, as given by the Larmor formula, even though one cannot do the mathematics of deriving the formula for mass increase with speed if there is such radiation.
That formula declares that the electrodynamic force between two charges e, e' acts directly along the line joining them and is proportional to ee', inversely proportional to the square of their separation distance and directly proportional to the square of their relative velocity.
To proceed, the task at hand is to analyze in terms of mechanics the energy involved when two particles of different masses m, M come into collision at velocities of u, U, respectively and emerge from that collision at velocities v, V, respectively, assuming no loss of energy by radiation or otherwise.

 1958a
This author will no doubt be deemed to be somewhat naive for thinking in a Newtonian sense that an action must have a cause and that an electron will not accelerate unless a suitable field acting on the electron charge is present.
How Einstein could develop a theory based on the contrary proposition is quite astounding, especially as one knew from the electron activity in atoms that electrons were subject to acceleration but had an energy conservative property which later was seen as its quantized state.
Their teaching expands into the 'wave zone' where they are developing theory that approximates the physics of collective charge actions and no longer the physics of the individual electron.

Larmor is the correct spelling and I found a definitive source that attributes the terms 'Larmor precession', the 'Larmor frequency', 'Larmor's theorem' and 'Larmor's formula' to Joseph Larmor Born: 11 July 1857 Died: 19 May 1942.
One would have to go through the publications to find at what date(s) the 'Larmor' terms started showing up.
Some on-line encyclopedias do not include "Joseph Larmor", so that didn't help when I was looking for sources.

Various types of elastic solid medium have thus been invented to represent the aether, without complete success in any case.
In T. MacCullagh's hands the correct equations were derived from a single energy formula by the principle of least action; and while the validity of this dynamical method was maintained, it was frankly admitted that no mechanical analogy was forthcoming.
In this place it must suffice to indicate the gist of the more recent developments of the electro-optical theory, which involve the dynamical verification of Fresnel's hypothesis regarding optical convection and the other relations above described.

I've never understood why the Larmor formula isn't even mentioned in most introductory textbooks.
You can also understand why the sky is blue and polarized, and explain why a classical Rutherford atom, with electrons orbiting around the nucleus, would be unstable, radiating away all its energy in a fraction of a nanosecond.
More generally, the Larmor formula ties electromagnetic waves to their source, making it clear that radiation requires not just motion, but also acceleration of charged particles.

For a linear accelerator, the motion is one-dimensional.
Thus, in a linear accelerator, the radiated power depends on the external force acting on the particle, and not on the actual energy or momentum of the particle.
It is obvious, from the above formula, that light particles, such as electrons, are going to radiate a lot more than heavier particles, such as protons.

I reasoned that Larmor had declared the electron to be accelerated without saying how it was accelerated and without allowing for its charge interaction with that essential accelerating field.
Just to put this in context, what it means is that all the elementary particles, such as protons, which have a core charge radius that is less than one thousandth that of the electron, have an intrinsic kinetic energy somehow stored as part of their moving system.
