		Larrau is a pretty village high up in the mountains in the Pays Basque near the Pic d'Orhi one of the highest mountains in this fiercely independent region.
		To the south a road meanders over the mountains to the Port de Larrau and thence to Spain, following one of the many smaller routes once used by the pilgrims going to St Jacques de Compostelle.
		Larrau is close to the Grand Randonér (GR) no 10; there are also a number of hiking routes into the mountains where you constantly get wonderful views, including one to the Pic d'Orhi which dominates this area.

		There is one campsite in Larrau, the Ixtila (tel 05.59.28.63.09; closed mid-Nov to March), and a gîte d'étape - with restaurant - 3km away at LOGIBAR (tel 05.59.28.61.14; closed Dec-Feb), close to the mouth of the Gorges d'Holzarte.
		This gorge is one of several in the region, cutting deep into northern slopes of the ridge that forms the frontier with Spain.

		I have no idea to this day what it was trundling around out there in the trees, but I was glad when daylight broke.
		I began extremely thirsty, and there wasn't a soul around until I reached the summit and border point of Puerto de Larrau.
		I had expected some sort of cafe at this point, but the place was deserted except for two Spanish walkers about to sally forth onto the mountain ridge.
