Biography for Larry Blyden   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Genial, dark-haired, often bespectacled Ivan Lawrence Blieden (pronounced Blee-den), better known as actor Larry Blyden, was born in Houston, Texas, the son of a lawyer.
Larry was also a big game show enthusiast and was seen frequently as a panelist on "Password" (1961) and "To Tell the Truth" (1969), among many others.
Highly personable and modestly unassuming, Larry Blyden may not have hit the heights, but he was a recognizable name and a durable talent - one of Broadway's brighter lights for over two decades.

Host Blyden would then give a bit of background on the contestant to lead the panel a bit on the contestant’s full-time or part-time occupation, which would then be shown to the studio and home audience, but not to the four celebrity panelists.
Fates admits in his book Blyden was chosen because of his talent, but also because as a Broadway actor, he was tied to New York City, and thus the show couldn’t be moved to Los Angeles, which was where Goodson-Todman Productions was slowly migrating.
A bright man despite his goofy schtick, his fierce determination to nail the Mystery Guest every time resulted in what Larry Blyden called "Fates’ Law:" if a panelist guesses the Mystery Guest incorrectly, he or she is out for the round.

EW HAVEN -- One morning last January, while Larry Blyden was packing for a vacation in the Orient, he received an unexpected phone call.
The recipient of Blyden's vital statistic was Burt Shevelove, co-author of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," a ribald pastiche of Roman comedies by Plautus.
Blyden is not a member of the repertory theater, but Shevelove wanted him for a guest appearance in New Haven after he got tired of the Himalayas.

But Larry Blyden is a good host and a likable guy (it's a shame he died in a car crash) and Arlene Francis is still tops.
As congenial as Larry Blyden was (rest his soul), he was no John Charles Daly and Soupy Sales was a far cry from Bennett Cerf.
With his boyish Texas drawl and likable humor, Larry- whom I hadn't even thought of until this week, and whose story and clips have a Web page of their own- helped save a great old game show from the shark tank.

What Makes Sammy Run? (Sammy Glick on Television)
John Forsythe played Al Manhein, Barbara Rush was Kit Sargent, Dina Merrill was Laurette Harrington and Larry Blyden gave the most acclaimed performance of his career as Sammy Glick.
To etch what is largely a one-dimensional character through a range of shadings, to give it coloration and life and just enough of a hint of humanity, is no easy task, yet Blyden did it memorably.
The title role of Sammy Glick is being played by Larry Blyden; he is doing a most superior job.

The New What's My Line was boring! - GSN Buzz
As for Blyden, yes he was comical but that was his nature.
Also, when Larry took the helm, it's also interesting to note that many of the mystery guests were popular movie stars of the past who Larry had gotten to know either by working with or interviewing himself in his "younger and more formidable years".
Blyden helped lighten things up, and his version gave the format a little air with brief performances by some of the contestants.

During Flower Drum's Boston tryout, when Nightclub Comic Larry Storch did not work out in the role of Sammy Fong, he was quickly replaced by a more experienced stage veteran, Larry Blyden.
A sentimental song was cut, and Blyden's part was beefed up; Hammerstein spent two days writing the lyrics of a new song, and Rodgers retired to the Shubert Theater ladies' room (which during rehearsals was equipped with a piano) and wrote the music in less than six hours.
But this is a minor irritation, considering that they will all be around New York for a long time—Great White Father and Daddy, Miyoshi, Pat and all the kids—just a big Oriental family beating their flowery drum.

Shot down while escaping the cops, two-bit hoodlum Rocky Valentine (Larry Blyden) awakens to find a jovial, bearded fellow named Mr.
Realizing that he is now dead, Rocky assumes that Pip is his guardian angel, an assumption "proven" when Rocky is transported to an idyllic world where his every wish is granted.
Written by Charles Beaumont, this morbidly comic Twilight Zone episode was originally to have starred Mickey Rooney; at one point, Beaumont jokingly suggested that series creator Rod Serling step into the role of Rocky Valentine before Larry Blyden was decided upon.
