	Larry Hisle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Larry Eugene Hisle (born May 5, 1947 in Portsmouth, Ohio) is a former outfielder in Major League Baseball who played with the Philadelphia Phillies (1968-71), Minnesota Twins (1973-77) and Milwaukee Brewers (1978-82).
		Hisle enjoyed the new American League rule by collecting two home runs and seven runs batted in for the Twins.
		Hisle's son, Larry Jr., is a former basketball player at the University of Wisconsin.

		Hisle made his big-league debut on April 10, 1968 and went 2-for-3 in each of his first two games, but received just one more start and was sent down to Triple-A in late April.
		Hisle fell off a cliff in his second year, hitting just.205/.299/.353, and when he got off to another slow start in 1971 the Phillies demoted him to Triple-A. Hisle batted.328 with a.597 slugging percentage in 62 games there, but then struggled again when the Phillies called him up near the end of the 1971 season.
		Hisle was on track for the best season of his career in 1975, hitting.314/.361/.518 with 11 homers and 17 steals in just 57 games when a bone spur in his elbow forced him to the disabled list.

		Hisle’s best year (24 win shares) equals Allison’s third best season as a Twin and Hisle’s three best non-consecutive seaons (24 win shares in 1977, 19 in 1976 and 18 in 1974) are less valuable than Allison’s three best periods of three consecutive years.
		This isn’t surprising in that Hisle left Minnesota at the age of 30 while Allison stayed until he was 35 including his final two seasons where his role and performance greatly diminished.
		Hisle did have somewhat better situational statistics (90 runs, 100 RBI per 162 games) than Allison (85 and 84 for his years in Minnesota; 90 and 89 if one excludes his years as a part-timer) but Hisle never hit behind Killebrew in his prime.

		Hisle, a soft-spoken orphan, was recruited for Ohio State University by the governor of Ohio, and signed with the Phillies while still enrolled.
		Despite tying the then-ML rookie record by striking out 152 times, Hisle was a Topps Rookie All-Star (.266, 20 HR) in 1969 even though he was still weak from a 1968 hepatitis infection.
		He didn't get along with parsimonious Twins owner Calvin Griffith; as a free agent, Hisle signed a $3.2 million package with Milwaukee in 1978 and delivered 34 homers and 115 RBI to finish third in the AL MVP balloting.

		We'd love to make room for RHP Larry Yount, if only for his genetics -- he's Robin's older brother -- but according to BBRef, he appeared in just one game for the '71 Astros without facing a batter or recording an out, so I'm not positive he qualifies as having been in the big leagues.
		He was traded to the Brewers in 1974, the same year little bro debuted with that team as a teenage shortstop, but Larry never made the bigs in Beertown.
		Surely the second baseman should be Laughing Larry Doyle (1907-1920) - some of you know of my interest in the 1912 Giants, and he was one of the best players in the league that year.

		Signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers out of high school in pre-draft days (1964), Tom Hutton was a seven-year veteran of the Dodgers' deep minor-league system when L.A. traded him to the Philadelphia Phillies in October 1971 for Larry Hisle.
		Hisle ended up in AAA Albuquerque, but Hutton moved straight on to the Phillies' major-league roster and stayed there for six years, playing a role on division champions in 1976 and 1977.
		Hutton was a reserve first baseman, emergency outfielder, and left-handed pinch hitter.
