LarryHolmes is a former world heavyweight boxing champion considered one of the fiercest fighters in the history of heavyweight boxing.
Holmes was criticized by many for comments he made after the fight, saying that "Rocky Marciano couldn't have carried my jockstrap".
Holmes' lack of popularity is attributed to him being the direct successor to Muhammad Ali, one of the most accomplished and most loved heavyweight champions of all time.

An odd twist of publishing fate once again has former heavyweight champion LarryHolmes locked with and overshadowed by the presence of Muhammad Ali; David Remnick's superb biography of the Greatest, King of the World, was published at the same time.
Holmes didn't have a chance to finish grammar school?he began work at 13?but while there he was introduced to wrestling and boxing.
Larry's story is interesting and while there may have been a touch of self-aggrandishment throughout, he did not overdo it.
After the fans voiced their displeasure, Holmes picked up the pace in the second half, using his jab effectively to redden Butterbean’s face, eventually causing a cut on the outside of his left eyebrow, though the blood flowed outside Bean's eye, not into it.
Holmes announced to the crowd afterward that it was his last fight.
Larry's legend has grown with the years, so to continue would diminish the long-awaited stature he worked so hard to attain.

GerryCooney fought an excellent 12 rounds against a very skilled and technical fighter LarryHolmes giving everything he had,and giving Larry all he could handle over 12 rounds. Unfortunatly......i t was a 15 round fight
Trouble is, LarryHolmes is an all time great, who was faster, better technically and he had one of the best chins you will ever see.
holmes is the probably the greatest boxer of all time.
LarryHolmes never fought any good apponents he's so over rated i wish Muhammad Ali would have kicked his but he was well past his prime.Back to Larry he only fought washed up fighters that were way past there prime.
i'll never forget watching the incredibly hyped up bout with gerry cooney.(ahh those were the days, before pay per view) should have retired after the micheal spinks fight very sad to see him trying to hang on and tarnishing a otherwise great status in boxing histroy.

The former champion is, of course, LarryHolmes, 54-3 with 37 knockouts, who was generally recognized as THE heavyweight champion from 1978 until 1985.
His 1978 battle with Ken Norton for the World Boxing Council championship is one of the classic heavyweight slugouts of all time.
After winning the title, Holmes proceeded to give everyone a shot, but he too had trouble gaining public acceptance as he followed in the footsteps of "The Greatest," Muhammad Ali.
Immediately following that fight, Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Tommy Hearns I was announced and I was approached by the President of our company to see if we could sell the pay-per-view rights to cable companies, as well as, to our over-the-air subscribers.
The Leonard-Hearns fight was a huge success on cable systems that used the trap, and immediately following that fight, Don King contacted me to use the device on the LarryHolmesvsGerryCooney heavyweight championship fight.
During the Foreman fight, we distributed the event to hundreds of sports bars on closed circuit television and during the telecast there was a great women’s bout that really stole the show.
