USC screenwriting team make good   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
While it may seem like George Lucas is the only USC graduate who has been in the news recently, the truth is that both Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski have forged a monumental stature in the film world.
Larry Flynt himself did not authorize the bio-pic, and the two writers did not set out to write a film that glorified Hustler magazine or Flynt's attitude.
And the movie is not an advocacy for Larry Flynt the man. It's an advocacy for the concept of the First Amendment, and Larry Flynt is a great way of illustrating the concept.

Salon | Pissing on virtue, monogamy, God and patriotism
The frequently funny and wildly uneven script by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski ("Ed Wood") operates on two basic assumptions: the country is divided into hustlers and rubes and there is no freedom of the press.
When Larry appears in court in battle helmet, wearing the flag as a diaper, talking gibberish or openly abusing the judge, he's not just grandstanding.
She so disarms Larry — getting him to propose to her, coming up with even dirtier ideas for the magazine than he does — that you have no trouble believing he's nuts about her.

And for Woody Harrelson, who was stunning in Natural Born Killers, Larry Flynt appeared to mark a further step on his road to recognition as a first-rate actor.
We are predisposed from that moment on to view Larry in particular as a lovable rogue, pushing the limits perhaps, but simply trying to get by.
I'm sure that Larry Flynt in person was a monster - not the kind of person you would really want to know too well, prone to violent outbursts of temper, foul-mouthed and crude.

WOODY HARRELSON (Larry Flynt) is one of a select group of actors that have successfully made the transition from the small screen to motion pictures.
Karaszewski was born and raised in South Bend, Indiana, and worked as a film critic for the NBC affiliate's nightly news program, before writing and directing Beyond Our Control, a weekly half-hour satirical television show which won the Grand Prix Award for television at the Chicago International Film Festival.

The DVD Journal | Reviews : The People vs. Larry Flynt: Special Edition
There are many facets to the quixotic character of Larry Flynt — few of them redeeming — and there are several angles one could work in trying to tell his tale.
The People vs. Larry Flynt begins amusingly with Flynt's rural Kentucky upbringing, where the enterprising adolescent made a meager profit as a bootlegger — a foreshadowing of his looming success as a caterer to men's appetite for vice.
The second scene is an extension of the sequence in which Larry shows his parents around his mansion, taking them down into the basement where he's had a complete replica of their old shack of a house built exactly to scale.

The People Vs. Larry Flynt is an account of the life, career and struggles of Larry Flynt, publisher of the (in)famous Hustler magazine.
The controversy surrounding Hustler magazine was its depiction of female genitalia and sexual interaction, a huge taboo (not even Playboy went as far) and an offensive display to the public (the children, of course).
The script by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski is structured very well, but takes into account the combining of several courtroom events and people.

With the success of "Ed Wood", Karaszewski and Alexander were able to sell an even more controversial biopic of the pornographic magazine publisher, "The People vs. Larry Flynt" (1996), produced by Oliver Stone and directed by Milos Forman.
Karaszewski and Alexander also did uncredited work on two films.

CJR - The People vs. Larry Flynt, by James Boylan
The published shooting script of The People vs. Larry Flynt (by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski; New Market Press) contains, among many scenes squeezed out of the film, a discussion by Larry Flynt, founder of the illustrated monthly Hustler, with his staff after he weathers a prosecution for publishing pornography.
In essence, this film is the story of how Larry Flynt came to know and love the First Amendment.
The climax of the romance is his victory in the Supreme Court of the United States over Jerry Falwell, whom his magazine had portrayed, in coarse jest, as having had intercourse with his mother in an outhouse.

Occasionally it tries to be a love story as it concentrates on the romance between Larry and Althea.

After months of tracking rumors and talking to Kaufman's family and friends, Alexander and Karaszewski had no clue who the real Andy was or how to structure a screenplay about him.
It was only after one of Kaufman's girlfriends told them "there is no real Andy" that they found the key to their movie--the comic with multiple personalities was actually an invisible man. With that notion as their guide, they wrote Man on the Moon, a movie nearly as ambiguous as Kaufman himself.
In their spartan Beverly Hills office, the reed-thin Alexander works at his neatly organized desk while the beefy Karaszewski lies on a nearby sofa, surrounded by a mess of scattered papers, barking out lines of brash dialogue.

Forman's heart is in the legal issues of Larry's life, and he delivers a lively thesis on First Amendment rights.
Larry Flynt (Harrelson), the scurrilous publisher of Hustler magazine, is painted here as an ironic American hero -- a scumbag forced into political awareness by his legal battles.
The Moral Majority try to jail him for obscenity; his straight-arrow lawyer, Alan Issacman (Edward Norton), is driven to distraction by Larry's buffoonish antics in court.

Its publisher, a grade-school dropout and Kentucky redneck, was nobody's hero, but circumstance would cast him as the era's last crusader.
It was a role that brought Larry Flynt both ruin and glory.

Co-written and co-directed by illustrious biopic scribes Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (they wrote "Ed Wood," "People Vs. Larry Flynt" and "Man on the Moon") without a whiff of the talent they've shown as screenwriters in the last few years, "Screwed" depends heavily on excess for its presumed comedy.
Before they turned to writing Oscar-nominated biographies, Alexander and Karaszewski earned their bread and butter on crappy kid fare like "Problem Child" and the "That Darn Cat" remake -- and "Screwed" is still the worst thing they've ever done.
