Larry LaPrise is the man credited with writing perhaps America’s best-known novelty dance song ever, “The Hokey Pokey,”; although the extent to which he actually invented the dance remains in dispute.
In 1956, LaPrise was sued by a songwriter named Bob Degen, who owned the copyright of a similar song from 1944 called “The Hokey Pokey Dance”; the suit was settled out of court and the royalties split.
LaPrise, meanwhile, continued playing locally with the Ram Trio until the ‘60s; the father of six children, he gave up music to work for the post office in Ketchum, ID, never penning another hit.

He might have written the tune, but the words - as I understand it - go back to the 17th century as a skit on the Catholic Mass.[1] It`s cokey not pokey btw, unless your American that is. [1] of course that could be just another internet urban myth.

In fact, Larry LaPrise even informs the careful listener that his song is the very Rosetta stone for living.

As my e-mail friend wrote, the most traumatic part of Larry LaPrise's death for his family was getting him into the coffin.

The Austin Chronicle Music: No Dominion: R.I.P. 2003
A popular bit of e-mail humor passed around earlier this year reported the death of Larry LaPrise, composer of the "Hokey Pokey." The obituary reported that the services were inexplicably delayed, because the funeral director had some trouble with the body.
Forty years after those tweens, teens, and twentysomethings took up instruments, held microphones, or fell in love with bands over a silly piece of music so hard it hurt, they're also beginning to die in numbers that will in a few years make 2003's roll call look like Great White's guest list.
Larry LaPrise actually died in 1996, yet the recirculation of that e-mail is a tribute not just to the enduring whimsy of "The Hokey Pokey," but to the willingness of the human spirit to counter sadness with levity.
